What You Will Do
Position may be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 or 2 level depending on the candidate’s qualifications. The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division (PFE‑DO) and Design Engineering (PFE‑DE) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are seeking a Structural Engineer to design renovations, modifications, and new structures within and around the plutonium facility. Responsibilities include installing equipment on pads or skids with post‑installed anchors, designing crane girders, support structures, canopies, equipment stands, piping/conduit supports, wall/floor/ceiling penetrations, and concrete slabs.
At the higher level, senior engineers work with junior engineers across disciplines to develop full‑system design solutions through mentoring, calculations, and leadership.
- Knowledge of structural engineering systems, calculations, and computer‑aided engineering tools to solve operational problems.
- Structural analysis experience in SAP 2000, GT STRUDL, RISA, STAAD, or equivalent.
- Understanding of engineering work, planning, construction, and control methods.
- Experience with engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies; extensive knowledge of laboratory procedures, standards, and guides.
Job Requirements for the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2
- Knowledge of industry, regulatory, national, and DOE codes and standards (IBC, AISC 360, ACI 318, ASCE 7, DOE‑STD 1020).
- Knowledge of engineering principles, procedures, design guides, and administrative practices.
- Knowledge of project and process engineering practices.
Lower level:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a minimum of 2 years practical experience;
Engineer in Training registration highly desirable. Higher level:
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years practical experience; advanced engineering or technical degree preferred;
Professional Engineer registration highly desirable.
- Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to structural design implementation.
- Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures.
- Knowledge of Revit or Building Information Modeling.
- Current registration as an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) is highly desirable.
General physical mobility: standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending. Specific physical requirements involve use of both hands, arms, legs, and feet; carrying or lifting up to 20 pounds. Work environment includes noise, ionizing and non‑ionizing radiation, machinery with moving parts, and irregular hours. Shift or weekend schedules possible with potential shift differential pay.

Position requires a Q clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship except in very limited circumstances. Eligibility criteria include being at least 18 years old. Background investigation and additional authorization may be required.
