What You Will Do
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 ($125,200 - $211,300)
The Engineer will serve as the subject‑matter expert for nuclear facility electrical engineering matters, including electrical safety, power quality, power monitoring, critical power reliability and redundancy, building modifications, and development of new structures and equipment within LANL nuclear facilities. Responsibilities include performing engineering studies such as short‑circuit analysis, device coordination, equipment sizing, exterior lighting, fault current, arc flash for medium and low‑voltage equipment, demolition, installation, upgrades, and repairs.
Successful candidates will qualify as a Cognizant System Engineer (CSE) on one or more Vital Safety Systems (VSS) that support LANL nuclear facilities.
The Engineer will work alongside junior and senior engineers across disciplines (fire protection, structural, mechanical, electrical) and peers in team settings to complete collaborative full‑system design solutions through mentoring and leadership.
MinimumJob Requirements
- Advanced experience as an electrical engineer at a major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility with a strong background in low and medium voltage systems.
- Advanced experience in the design, maintenance, and operation of low and medium voltage systems.
- Advanced experience with lightning protection design and the application of NFPA 780.
- Demonstrated experience using SKM software.
- Experience applying codes and standards in a regulated environment, including IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NFPA 70, and NFPA 70E.
- Ability to perform analysis and calculations to support engineered solutions.
- Capability to work independently with minimal guidance and to communicate solutions verbally and in writing to management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks with varying resources and deadlines.
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance (requires U.S. citizenship).
Job Requirements – Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4
- Expert ability to prepare and review technical reports and studies for new and existing facility structural systems.
- Ability to define and collect metrics on usage, process, safety, and other parameters.
- Expert knowledge to define or establish design or analysis tasks and prepare design concepts meeting regulatory and performance requirements.
- Experience developing design details, calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections incorporating applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements.
- Advanced experience evaluating and trending system health.
- Expert ability to interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer during design as the Electrical SME.
Lower level:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Higher level:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution and a minimum of 12 years of practical work experience. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
- Experience with controls related to equipment operation such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and relay control.
- Experience as an electrical engineer at a DOE non‑reactor nuclear facility with a strong background in low and medium voltage power systems.
- Experience with DOE Orders and Standards as related to facility systems.
- Experience working within an ASME NQA‑1 or similar quality program.
- Experience supporting safety analyses and hazard evaluations.
- Experience mentoring engineering interns and other engineers.
- Active Q clearance.
