Sigma Division provides outstanding engineering solutions using materials science to enable the lab’s mission for supporting and improving national security. Utilizing world class expertise and innovation, we are focused on leading the way in manufacturing science related to nuclear weapons, metals and alloys, nuclear fuels, and a variety of non-metallic materials.
This opening is for a Deputy Group Leader (DGL) reporting directly to the Group Leader (GL) of Sigma‑1. Sigma‑1 is one of three groups under the Division and is comprised of four teams:
Foundry and Solidification Science, Deformation Processing, Powder Materials Processing, and Materials Compatibility. Each team contributes a unique capability that along with its sister organizations enables the Division to complete its mission.
- Support excellence in technical program execution including high quality scientific research and completion of program/project deliverables.
- Assist with employee teambuilding to enhance capabilities and support initiatives.
- Mentor employees to develop R&D science and manufacturing competencies.
- Develop the team without compromising the interpersonal relationships of group members.
- Support stewardship of the Group’s funding base and business management.
Job Requirements Technical
Demonstrated professional‑level background with a record of technical achievement in a materials science or engineering field.
Leadership and ManagementExperience in a management position, with a proven ability to effectively lead teams, manage, and develop employees. Demonstrated successful leadership of projects and personnel.
Team BuildingPrevious experience in building and leading teams, mentoring and motivating employees, and working effectively with all levels of internal and external personnel to gain consensus and resolve conflicts.
Safety and SecurityWorking knowledge of operational rigor needed to maintain safe, secure, and regulatory compliant operations.
CommunicationDemonstrated ability to communicate to personnel at all levels, with an emphasis on experience coordinating efforts in cross‑organizational collaboration projects.
Agility and Decision MakingDemonstrated decision making and creative problem‑solving skills with the ability to adapt to rapidly changing tactical drivers, regulations, and work conditions while enabling production of quality results and mission advancement.
- Ability to obtain a "Q" clearance.
Position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. An advanced degree in science or engineering is preferred.

- Experience working in both R&D and manufacturing environments, highly desirable.

The position requires a Q clearance. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance and obtaining such clearance requires U.S. citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent on the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required.
