Position: Work Control Planner 3/4

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Work Control Planner 3/4 level. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

As a Work Control Planner, you will develop, review, and monitor work packages, including time, material, and labor estimates; craft step‑by‑step work instructions; and maintain the database and related programs necessary for performance data and statistical reporting. You will evaluate procedures for improvements, develop and maintain maintenance policies, and provide training to support the maintenance program.

  • Prepare, review, and issue equipment and/or system modification, corrective maintenance, and/or preventative maintenance work packages for unique and/or complex facilities.
  • Analyze time and material requirements and prepare detailed specifications for estimates.
  • Develop step‑by‑step instructions for complex work activities.
  • Track and expedite work packages according to established priority.
  • Prepare and/or review isolation, containment, or de‑energizing instructions for unique mechanical, physical, electrical, chemical, and/or radiological systems.
  • Oversee permit development, testing requirements, documentation generation, records management, database information management, retrieval, review, and/or training.
  • Adhere to Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to work control and planning.
  • Ensure all work control results, materials, processes, and final products meet quality specifications and are completed according to requirements.
Responsibilities for Work Control Planner 4
  • Manage and expedite priority of work packages.
  • Prepare and/or review isolation, containment, or de‑energization instructions for complex mechanical, physical, electrical, chemical, and/or radiological systems.
  • Manage functional and administrative activities including permit development, testing requirements, documentation generation, records management, database information management, retrieval, review, and/or training.
What You Need Minimum

Job Requirements Knowledge & Expertise
  • Understand work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and lock‑out/tag‑out policies and procedures.
  • Interpret mechanical and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
  • Knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting work control and planning.
  • Knowledge of work control and facility policies, practices, and procedures.
Planning & Prioritization
  • Experience with work control, materials management, and mechanical maintenance.
  • Conduct research, investigate alternative solutions, and recommend solutions for work control problems.
  • Communicate major elements of work control and planning to technical and non‑technical personnel.
Technology
  • Utilize and manipulate a computerized work management system to track planning activities.
  • Prepare and present work control reports.

Knowledge & Expertise
  • Extensive knowledge of work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and lock‑out/tag‑out policies and procedures in unique and/or complex facilities, including nuclear facilities.
Planning & Prioritization
  • Mentor less experienced work control personnel.
Education & Experience
  • Work Control Planner 3:
    Associate's Degree and 8 years of related experience (or equivalent). Post‑graduate coursework may be desirable.
  • Work Control Planner 4:
    Bachelor's Degree and 12 years of related experience (or equivalent). Post‑graduate coursework may be expected.

Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma.
Desired Qualifications
  • Extensive knowledge of Laboratory work control and facility policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Experience in nuclear facility maintenance and construction planning.
  • Active Q clearance.
Work Location and Schedule

Onsite in Los Alamos, NM. The position may require 24/7 coverage, including shift and weekend schedules. Shift differential pay may apply.

Position Commitment

Regular appointment employees must complete a 1‑year continuous service period to be eligible for posted jobs at the Laboratory.
