Job Description & How to Apply Below
** What You Will Do*
* ** This position will be filled at either the 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.*
* The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division (PFE-DO) and PFE-RCMR: CMR AND RLUOB at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are seeking an Electrical Engineer or engineers with facility power expertise. Put your engineering talents to good use by joining our world-class Engineering team! Our workforce thrives in an environment that values creativity and problem solving, where every idea and perspective is welcomed. This is your chance to make a real difference while working on important systems directly impacting national security.
** Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 $ 125,200 - $211,300*
* The selected candidate will play a critical part in ensuring electrical safety, power quality, power monitoring, and critical power reliability within and around the plutonium facility. You will lead and collaborate on projects involving facility modifications, new equipment installations, and infrastructure development, ensuring that all systems meet the highest standards of performance, safety, and compliance. Your work may include conducting and reviewing complex engineering studies such as short-circuit analysis, device coordination, equipment sizing, fault current calculations, lighting design, and arc flash assessments for low-voltage (0-600V) systems.
You will also support demolition, installation, upgrade, and repair activities within nuclear facilities. You will also have the opportunity to qualify as a Cognizant System Engineer (CSE) for one or more Vital Safety Systems (VSS) supporting LANL nuclear facilities.
This position requires demonstrated technical depth in electrical engineering, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and proven leadership in guiding cross-disciplinary teams within a highly regulated nuclear environment. The role also demands effective communication, sound engineering judgment, and a commitment to mentorship and continuous professional development. The position will support mentoring of junior engineers in professional development. The selected candidate will ensure that all work aligns with DOE Orders and Standards, the Nuclear Safety Management Rule, American Nuclear Society Standards, national consensus codes, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
This is an opportunity to contribute to a world-class scientific and engineering institution, supporting national security through the safe, reliable, and innovative design and operation of nuclear facility systems.
** Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4 $ 150,300 - $260,800*
* In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the selected candidate identifies and/or leads activities within a nuclear facility engineering discipline, demonstrating initiative, technical depth, and leadership in complex project environments. The candidate must be able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, applying broad and diversified knowledge of nuclear facility engineering principles and practices in the preparation and execution of nuclear facility engineering deliverables.
This includes utilizing nuclear engineering technology to accomplish work safely and efficiently while continuously improving engineering and work processes to meet evolving customer and mission needs. The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical foundation, sound judgment, and the ability to integrate requirements across multiple systems and disciplines to ensure safe, compliant, and reliable facility operations. The candidate will be expected to support advanced mentoring and coaching opportunities to other engineers.
The candidate can either be a Electrical Engineer or another engineering discipline (such as a Mechanical Engineer) with demonstrated experience or the willingness and ability to support facility electrical systems within LANL's nuclear facilities.
