Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3/4 (Mechanical Engineer)
** What You Will Do*
* ** This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.*
* The Nuclear Facilities Engineering Mechanical Engineer role sits at the center of the LANL nuclear mission, where precision, compliance, and performance intersect.  This position drives the effective and efficient implementation of nuclear facility engineering requirements, navigating a complex landscape that includes the Nuclear Safety Management Rule, DOE Orders, American Nuclear Society standards, national consensus codes, recognized quality benchmarks, Laboratory directives, and federal, state, and local regulations.

Nuclear Facilities Engineers don't just follow requirements, they define them.  They establish the technical foundation for nuclear facilities, safety systems, operational equipment, procedures, testing, acceptance criteria, and quality standards.  Working across disciplines, they integrate seamlessly with programmatic, operations, maintenance, document control, and project management teams to ensure that every requirement supports mission execution without compromise.

This role demands both ownership and collaboration.  It requires the ability to lead or contribute within a specialized engineering discipline, operate independently when needed, and still function as a critical part of a larger system.  Engineers in this space apply broad, diversified expertise to develop high impact deliverables, leverage advanced nuclear engineering technologies, and continuously refine processes to meet evolving mission demands and customer expectations.

** Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 - $128,000 - $215,900*
* + Ensures safety and security compliance, maintains required training, and integrates both into all work activities, including stopping work when conditions are unsafe or compromise security.

+ Applies and enforces nuclear facility engineering policies, procedures, and DOE and NNSA regulatory requirements. Leads evaluation of regulatory changes and technical data to resolve moderately complex engineering issues.

+ Manages the performance, configuration, and operability of nuclear facility systems and engineered safety features using a risk based graded approach. Provides design authority support for operations and maintenance to ensure continued operational readiness.

+ Leads development of engineering analyses, designs, and technical deliverables supporting nuclear facility operations. Contributes to advancement of engineering concepts, standards, and practices.

+ Leads significant portions of projects or teams and resolves moderately complex technical issues requiring analysis and judgment. Collaborates across engineering, operations, maintenance, and project teams to ensure delivery of mission objectives.

+ Develops and implements project plans for system design, installation, commissioning, and operation. Defines procurement requirements for nuclear quality related goods and services.

+ Operates with substantial independence. Assignments are often self initiated and largely self supervised, contributing to organizational goals and long range objectives.

+ Performs peer reviews and mentors junior staff. Fosters a respectful and inclusive work environment.

** Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4 - $153,600 - $266,500*
* In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level:

+ Ensures and reinforces safety and security compliance across activities, maintaining required training and establishing expectations that integrate safety and security into all work, including stopping work when necessary.

+ Enforces nuclear facility engineering policies, procedures, and DOE and NNSA regulatory requirements. Leads interpretation of regulatory changes and resolves highly complex or unique technical issues requiring evaluation of ambiguous or incomplete information.

+ Directs the performance, configuration, and operability of nuclear facility systems and engineered safety features. Provides design authority level support and ensures sustained operational readiness.

+ Leads development and approval of engineering analyses, designs, and technical products. Drives advancement of engineering concepts, standards, and practices with broad impact.

+ Leads projects, programs, or multi discipline teams and is accountable for resolving complex, high consequence technical issues. Interfaces across organizations and with external stakeholders, including regulators, to ensure alignment and compliance.

+ Establishes and executes project strategies for system design, installation, and commissioning. Oversees procurement strategies for nuclear quality related goods and services.

+ Operates with a high degree of autonomy and strategic judgment. Uses wide latitude in determining methods, approaches, and priorities, and influences organizational goals and long range…
