Job SummaryThe Materials Assessment and Compatibility Science (MACS) team seeks postdoctoral candidates to conduct computational modeling and simulation for the compatibility of various materials under differing conditions. The Sigma Complex offers material, component and manufacturing science to Los Alamos experimental programs across a wide range of materials, including metals, ceramics, composites and unconventional materials containing hydrogen through uranium.
Responsibilities- Lead research projects within a small team, working with mentors and the MACS team.
- Develop and implement simulation models for materials and processes using COMSOL, Abaqus, Python, or similar multiphysics software.
- Communicate results via oral and written reports to a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technicians, and technologists.
- Identify future directions and applications for findings and contribute to R&D proposals and publications.
Job Requirements
- Experience with COMSOL, Abaqus, Python, or similar multiphysics modeling software.
- Experience developing and implementing simulation models for materials and processes.
- Authorship of technical papers and conference presentations in peer‑reviewed venues.
- Ability to work in a team to write proposals for R&D funding.
- Experience working successfully in a complex regulatory environment and experimental facility.
- Capability to obtain a Q clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
- Self‑motivated, independent researcher with experience in interdisciplinary teams.
- Experience with AI/ML and advanced modeling languages.
- Strong written and oral communication skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Ph.D. in engineering, chemistry, metallurgical or materials engineering, materials science, or a related field completed within the last five years (or imminent completion) is required.
Physical RequirementsAbility to apply torque with hands or arms, fine motor control, and lift up to 25 pounds to a height of 3–4 feet and load into an enclosed space.
ClearanceThis position requires a Q clearance and is subject to a background investigation. U.S. citizenship is required except in extremely rare circumstances.
