What You Will Do
The Gas Transfer Systems Group (Q‑7) seeks an undergraduate student to support the GTS mission. This role involves working on a LANL project where you will be mentored in a two‑phased approach:
1) researching and planning for reactive materials in a glovebox;
2) understanding material requirements for a nuclear facility. You will collaborate with engineers, technologists, and technicians on interdisciplinary projects from conceptual development through system deployment and mission execution.
As the design authority for GTS, the team provides engineering and technical expertise to develop and deploy innovative gas transfer technologies critical to the nation’s nuclear deterrent.
Students will gain hands‑on technical experience, mentorship, and professional development through a formalized work plan complementing their chosen area of study.
MinimumJob Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program in any engineering discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear, Materials, Aeronautic, Chemical, Civil, Environmental).
- Enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours (or equivalent full‑time status) in an accredited degree program.
- Entering freshmen must provide documentation indicating matriculation into an appropriate undergraduate degree program.
- Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
- Computer programming in support of engineering design, data acquisition, analysis, or machine learning.
- Fabrication and testing techniques used within your selected engineering field(s).
- Computer‑Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience.
- Laboratory or shop experience demonstrating attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context.
- Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.
Onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

This position requires Q clearance. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. A Q clearance requires U.S. citizenship except in very limited circumstances. Depending on the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required and may not be available to dual citizens.

Successful applicants must complete a new‑employment drug test. The Laboratory maintains a substance‑abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
