Position: Space Systems Assurance and Implementation Deputy Group Leader (R&D Manager 3)

Overview

What You Will Do
The Space Systems Assurance and Implementation (ISR-7) Group is seeking an experienced and innovative technical leader to join our highly collaborative leadership team. ISR division designs, builds, delivers, and exploits innovative ground- and space-based measurement systems and provides analysis of data from these systems. Our projects range from cutting-edge scientific explorations to ensuring national and global security. ISR supports 400+ instruments on over 200 satellites, including NASA missions such as Voyager and the Mars Rovers.

Responsibilities
  • Deputy Group Leader (DGL) will work closely with the ISR-7 Group Leader (GL), providing technical and operational leadership and management oversight for a group of ~35 staff with expertise in mission design, systems engineering, technical project management, quality assurance, production engineering, electronics fabrication and assembly, and/or inventory management.
  • Lead strategic initiatives and address tactical needs ranging from facilities management to mission execution and staffing. Collaborate with the broader ISR-7 leadership team to develop and implement an organizational vision for ISR-7.
  • This role is half-time line management and half-time direct programmatic technical work. The ISR-7 DGL offers opportunities for learning and mentoring.
What You Need Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Leadership & Management – Ability to lead within a multidisciplinary R&D organization, managing resources through complex technical risk environments, competing priorities, and constrained funding. Demonstrated experience as a servant-leader who guides organizational direction, aligns resources with mission objectives, fosters innovation and trust, resolves conflicts, and executes workforce planning and retention strategies.
  • Technical Knowledge – Demonstrated knowledge and accomplishments in ISR-7 core capabilities related to space-based and remote-sensing instrumentation, including mission design, systems engineering, production engineering, quality management, electronics fabrication and assembly, and technical project management.
  • Teaming & Communication – Ability to build partnerships across organizations and disciplines, lead cross-functional collaborations, and communicate complex technical information to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Workforce Development – Commitment to mentoring and creating opportunities for professional growth; fostering an inclusive environment that supports career development of technical and support staff.
  • Safety and Security – Experience improving safety, security, environment, and health in a team workplace, including applying applicable processes and principles.
  • Clearance – Ability to obtain a Q clearance (U.S. citizenship typically required).
Education/Experience

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Desired Qualifications
  • Strong record of technical accomplishments and leadership in ISR-7 related areas.
  • Experience on a project team that designs, builds, tests, and delivers hardware for space applications.
  • Experience in operational support activities (e.g., safety or security assessment teams, LDRD reviews, policy development).
  • Familiarity with administration of policies and procedures in a large R&D enterprise.
  • Formal leadership and management training.
  • Working knowledge of DOE/NNSA/DoD/NASA programs, especially in ground/space verification missions.
  • Experience using project control principles to manage risk on complex projects.
  • PMP certification, INCOSE Systems Engineering certification, IPC J-STD-001 or related standard, and/or quality/process improvement certifications.

Work Location: Onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at management discretion.
