The W93 Systems Development and Realization Group (Q-20) seeks a Scientist 2/3 to lead a team responsible for developing and realizing polymer components of the W93/Mk7. As the Product Realization Team (PRT) Lead, you will coordinate LANL team efforts, collaborate with production agencies across the Nuclear Security Enterprise, and ensure the successful planning, execution, and delivery of a producible, Mark‑Quality design.
Responsibilities- Lead planning, execution, and status reporting for product realization of polymer components.
- Interface regularly with internal LANL organizations, external production agencies, and customers.
- Perform cross‑cutting work across multiple polymer PRTs and coordinate with QTE (Qualification, Test, and Evaluation).
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior staff.
- Collaborate with DoD, NNSA, and other agencies; build trust, gain consensus, and resolve conflicts.
- Communicate development progress and issues with Program Level PRT Lead, Systems Engineers, and other stakeholders.
- Oversee and complete complex/high‑profile projects on schedule and within budget.

- Knowledge and experience in one or more technical R&D disciplines; understanding of scientific integrity principles.
- Experience leading technical R&D projects, including hypothesis formulation, alternative solution investigation, and solution recommendation.
- Ability to present results to technical audiences.
- Experience with safe practices for technical work.
- Ability to solve complex problems with multiple variables and use unconventional methods.
Job Requirements (Scientist
3)
- Demonstrated leadership, influence, and mentorship in an R&D team environment.
- Record of leading cross‑organizational teams to solve complex problems.
- Thorough knowledge of engineering design, specifications, plans, and procedures related to product realization.
Lower level:
Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field plus 4 years of related experience (e.g., university or national lab research). Higher level:
Master’s degree in a STEM field plus 6 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with nuclear weapon system design and engineering, especially US Navy systems.
- Experience with nuclear weapon development, qualification, certification, or surveillance.
- Degree in a chemical, polymer, or material‑based field.
- Knowledge of chemical sciences and material experiment data evaluation.
- Knowledge of polymer aging, compatibility, GD&T, and engineering drawings.
- Understanding of requirements engineering, validation, and verification.
- Familiarity with DPBPS (Defense Programs Business Process System).
- Experience with product realization from concept to production.
- Active Q Clearance or equivalent DoD clearance.
