Job Summary
ENGINEER / SCIENTIST 3 – 3209 - LANL
- Los Alamos, NM. Duration: 1 Year with Renewal Options. One Position Available. US Citizenship Required.
ENGINEER / SCIENTIST 3 will ensure success of the team responsible for planning, managing requirements and interfaces, executing, testing, reporting status, and ultimately delivering a producible, Mark Quality design and product. At the Scientist 3 level, you will lead the planning, execution, and status reporting for product realization of the polymer components and interface regularly with internal LANL organizations, external production agencies, and external customers.
Additionally, Scientist 3 may perform cross‑cutting work across several polymer PRTs, coordinate with QTE, evaluate and revise requirements, and provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior staff.

- Education:
- Junior level:
Bachelors degree in a STEM field, 11 years of related experience or equivalent. - Advanced level:
Masters degree in a STEM field, 6 years of relevant experience or equivalent.

- Significant knowledge and experience in technical R&D disciplines.
- Understanding of scientific integrity principles.
- Experience developing and implementing R&D projects, including hypothesis formulation, testing, and solution recommendation.
- Experience presenting results to technical audiences.
- Knowledge of safe practices for technical work.
- Leadership, Collaboration & Program Management:
- Demonstrated ability to lead R&D teams, influence collaborators, and mentor early‑career staff.
- Record of leading cross‑organizational teams to solve complex problems.
- Excellent project management skills, completing complex projects on schedule and within budget.
- Engineering Design & Communication:
- Thorough knowledge of developing and implementing technical requirements, specifications, plans, reports, and procedures for product realization.
- Effective communication with Program Level PRT Leads, Systems Engineers, Program Office, Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Project Controls, and Test Technicians.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with nuclear weapon system design and engineering, especially US Navy systems.
- Experience with nuclear weapon development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, or surveillance.
- Degree in chemistry, material science, or engineering.
- Knowledge of chemical sciences and ability to evaluate data from material experiments.
- Understanding of material interactions, polymer aging and compatibility.
- Knowledge of GD&T and ability to interpret engineering drawings.
- Understanding of requirements engineering, validation, and verification.
- Familiarity with DPBPS.
- Experience with product realization from conceptual design through qualified production.
- Active Q Clearance, equivalent DoD clearance, or ability to obtain Active Q Clearance.
