What You Will Do
As a Waste Management Coordinator, you will oversee the proper storage, handling, characterisation, packaging, and transportation of hazardous, radioactive, and mixed waste generated by laboratory research. You will work closely with scientists, engineers, regulatory agencies, and internal teams to maintain compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
Responsibilities- Oversee storage, handling, characterisation, packaging, and transportation of various waste materials.
- Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations and coordinate with regulatory agencies.
- Advise research teams on waste classification and segregation, ensuring best practices.
- For the higher level: lead the waste management program, develop best practices, provide technical guidance, mentor staff, and support waste minimisation, sustainability initiatives, and process improvements.
- Understanding of work hazards, safety practices, and security requirements.
- Basic knowledge and experience handling, characterising, packaging, and transporting solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and mixed wastes.
- Practical work experience in a laboratory or high‑hazard facility that generates multiple waste types.
- Good communication skills to interact with technical and non‑technical personnel.
- Knowledge or certification per DOT 49 CFR (Basic/Advanced Hazardous Materials Shipper, Radioactive Materials Shipper, or Mixed Waste Shipper).
- Experience managing satellite accumulation areas, central accumulation areas, PCB storage, universal waste areas, and radioactive staging/storage areas.
Lower level:
Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of related experience or equivalent combination.
Higher level:
Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination.
- Active or transferable Q clearance and HRP.
- Experience coordinating cradle‑to‑grave management and disposition of wastes.
- Knowledge of LANL’s organisational structure and facilities.
- Experience with LANL’s waste management policies and procedures.
- Previous qualification as a waste professional in a DOE facility.
- Chemical lab packing experience.
- General physical mobility: sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, twisting trunk or back, balancing.
- Specific mobility: applying torque, gripping, pressing, pulling, pushing, reaching overhead, typing, use of both hands, arms, legs and feet.
- Weight handling: carry or lift 30+ pounds.
