Overview
Sigma Division focuses on manufacturing science emphasizing metallurgical processes and research in support of the experimental testing program at Los Alamos. The Additive Manufacturing (AM) team works with metal and ceramic AM technologies such as laser powder bed fusion, electron beam additive manufacturing, and cold spray. Engineers in this role design, validate, and prototype new additive manufacturing approaches, collaborate cross‑functionally, and support computational investigations of microstructure and residual stresses.
WhatYou Will Do
Lead projects to develop and validate advanced additive manufacturing processes, conduct experimental testing, analyze microstructures, and produce technical reports and presentations.
MinimumJob Requirements
- Expert in one or more metal additive manufacturing technologies (powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, wire arc additive, electron beam additive manufacturing).
- Proven expertise in metallurgy, solidification science, and microstructural evolution of metals used in AM.
- Expert level understanding of CAD software.
- Experience designing, leading, and executing projects to validate new AM approaches.
- Collaboration with scientists, engineers, technicians, and business stakeholders.
- Exceptional technical writing and presentation skills.
- Experience leading proposal writing for internal and external R&D funding.
- Hands‑on experience with diverse metal ADD hardware, energy sources, and processes.
- Leadership experience mentoring junior team members.
- Experience developing new ideas and acquiring funding for research teams.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to drive research independently.
- Advanced computational modeling and simulation skills.
- Strong data analysis and statistical or machine learning expertise.
- Experience with non‑destructive testing or characterization of metal microstructures.
- Experience with in‑situ diagnostics.
- Experience developing scientific vision and goals for R&D applications.
Master's degree in a STEM field and six years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Work LocationOn‑site in Los Alamos, NM.
Position Commitment1‑year appointment.
