What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 or 2, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division (PFE-DO) and Confinement Ventilation Systems (PFE-CV) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are seeking an Electrical System Engineer. NuclearFacilities Engineer 1 ($94,500 - $154,600)
- Support the Laboratory’s mission by serving as the subject matter expert for nuclear facility electrical engineering matters, including all aspects of electrical safety, power quality, power monitoring, critical power reliability/redundancy, building modifications, and development of new structures and equipment within and around the plutonium facility.
- Perform engineering studies such as short‑circuit, device coordination, equipment sizing, exterior lighting, fault current, arc flash for medium and low voltage equipment, demolition, installation, upgrades, and repairs.
- Possibly qualify as a Cognitive System Engineer (CSE) on one or more Vital Safety Systems (VSS) that support LANL Nuclear Facilities.
- In addition to the responsibilities of Engineer 1, work alongside junior and senior engineers (fire protection, structural, mechanical, and electrical) and other peers to complete collaborative full‑system design solutions through mentoring and leadership.
Job Requirements
- Awareness of engineering work, planning, construction, control methods, and project/process engineering/management practices.
- Awareness of industry, regulatory, or national codes and standards; engineering principles and procedures; design guides; appropriate standards; and administrative practices.
- Knowledge of analysis and calculation techniques to support engineered solutions.
- Ability to communicate engineering solutions verbally and in writing with management, customers, peers, and maintenance personnel.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft software products (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, etc.).
Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2
- Knowledge of engineering work, planning, construction, control methods, and project/process engineering/management practices.
- Demonstrated experience assisting with preparing technical reports and studies for technical baseline of new and existing facility structural systems.
- Experience collecting usage, process, safety, and other parameters of interest for structures, systems, or components.
- Experience assisting with design or analysis tasks and preparing design concepts that meet requirements.
- Experience assisting with developing design details, calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections that incorporate applicable design requirements.
- Experience evaluating and trending system health.
- Experience interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the customer during design development.
- Demonstrated communication skills, both written and verbal.
Current registration as an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) is highly desirable.
Education/Experience at Lower LevelPosition requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Candidates that meet the degree requirement but do not meet the two‑year experience requirement may be considered for hire through an allowable variance.
Education/Experience at Higher LevelPosition requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years practical work experience. An advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
