Position: Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1/2 (Structural Engineer)

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 or 2, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1

$94,500 – $154,600

Successful candidates will support the Laboratory’s mission by renovating rooms, modifying buildings and structural members, and developing new structures within and around the plutonium facility. Engineers will install equipment on housekeeping pads or skids using post‑installed anchors, support crane girders and crane support structures, canopies, equipment support stands, piping/conduit supports, wall/floor/ceiling penetrations, and concrete slabs. Incumbents will work alongside a multidisciplinary engineering team to complete collaborative full‑system solutions through mentoring, calculations, and leadership.

$104,100 – $172,200

In addition to the description above, engineers will work alongside junior and senior engineers (e.g., fire protection, structural, mechanical, and electrical) and other peers in team settings to complete collaborative full‑system design solutions through mentoring and leadership.

What You Need Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Knowledge of new and existing non‑reactor facility structural engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of computer‑aided engineering tools to solve operations‑based engineering problems.
  • Structural analysis experience in any of the following: SAP 2000, GT STRUDL, RISA, STAAD, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of engineering work, planning, construction, and control methods.
  • Knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies. Extensive knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.

Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2
  • Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or national, and Department of Energy codes and standards including IBC, AISC 360, ACI 318, ASCE 7, and DOE‑STD 1020.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.
  • Knowledge of project and process engineering practices.

Training/

Certifications:

Current registration as an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) is highly desirable.

Education and Experience – Lower Level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited college or university and a minimum of 2 years practical work experience. Candidates that meet the degree requirement but not the two‑year experience requirement are encouraged to apply and may be considered for hire through an allowable variance.

Education and Experience – Higher Level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience. An advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to structural design implementation.
  • Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures.
Essential Job Functions

General physical mobility, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending. Specific physical requirements include use of both hands, arms, legs, feet, and ability to carry/lift up to 20 pounds.

Work Environment

Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non‑ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule.

Onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Position commitment is 1 year.
