Research Scientist, Environmental Engineer
What You Will Do
Provide expertise, support, and technical leadership in H+ and H- ion‑beam physics, beamline development, optimization, operation, and diagnostics for the LANSCE Accelerator Modernization Project (LAMP). Support a range of activities including the design, construction, and operation of ion accelerators, test stands, and beam diagnostics, collaborate with computational scientists on ion‑beam dynamics, lead new projects and proposals, and serve as part of the AOT‑AE leadership team overseeing accelerator science and technology programs.
Employmentand Compensation

What You Need- Demonstrated experience operating ion sources and ion‑beam accelerator facilities related to LAMP.
- Ability to design, commission, and operate ion‑accelerator systems.
- Experience designing and operating ion‑beam diagnostics.
- Track record of meeting stakeholder expectations in a research organization focused on particle accelerators.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with internal and external collaborators.
- Ability to develop technical programs in partnership with others.
- Leadership experience in setting priorities, assigning tasks, evaluating performance, mentoring, coaching, team building, and conflict resolution.
- Ability to nurture and develop research, engineering, and technical support staff.
Requires a Master’s degree in a STEM field plus 12 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. A current Q clearance, or the ability to obtain one, is required.
Desired Qualifications- Successful management of a group of greater than 10 people.
- Experience managing a multi‑million‑dollar budget.
- Knowledge of Laboratory, DOD, DOE, and other national programs relevant to the group and division’s activities.
- Vision for the future of particle accelerators and their development.
- Experience leading implementation of safety, security, environmental, and other core laboratory business requirements.
- Current Q clearance or eligibility to obtain it.
Onsite, Los Alamos, NM. The position requires a continuous service period of one year.
