Position: Maintenance Field Service Engineer (R&D Engineer 1/2)

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the candidate’s skill level. The selected candidate will join the Prototype Fabrication Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory, working with a dedicated team of engineers, machinists, quality control professionals, and maintenance technicians to keep complex manufacturing equipment operating at optimum levels. Typical assignments include installation, troubleshooting, repair and preventive maintenance of advanced CNC mills and lathes.

You will learn, support and ensure that the division’s capabilities are maintained to guarantee continuous operations.

R&D Engineer 1 ($96,600 - $158,000)

Optimize machinery reliability, safety and performance by designing preventive maintenance programs, supporting corrective maintenance activities, and aiding in the integration of new equipment.

R&D Engineer 2 ($106,400 - $176,000)

In addition to level 1 duties, design, plan and execute complex projects within a manufacturing environment.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements

Technical Expertise

  • Working knowledge applying engineering practices and principles to integrate and repair complex manufacturing equipment.
  • Working knowledge of an effective preventive maintenance program.
  • Working knowledge of CAD software (e.g., Creo, Solid Works, NX, Catia).
  • Demonstrated experience writing work instructions, safety documentation, integrated work‑management documents and procedures for maintenance of industrial equipment.
  • Advanced ability to read and interpret machine‑tool drawings, diagrams and schematics to understand subsystem functions and overall performance.

Project Management

  • Knowledge and experience in project management for technical or operational work, including development of project plans, managing scope, schedule, budget, and identifying and managing risks for projects of limited scope and complexity.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities across multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Communication and Teamwork

  • Demonstrated record of dependability, reliability and long‑term commitment to job duties and programmatic goals.
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills for independently preparing and presenting data and reports to peers, senior colleagues, management and customers.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Level 2

  • Demonstrated ability to develop engineered solutions to complex electrical or mechanical systems challenges.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot and diagnose complex equipment to identify needed repairs to components and subsystems.
  • Advanced working knowledge and experience supporting and implementing preventive maintenance programs in a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects of advanced scope and complexity.

Education/Experience at Level 1

Position requires a Bachelors’ degree in Engineering from an accredited institution related to the occupation plus 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at Level 2

Position requires a Bachelors’ degree in Engineering from an accredited institution plus 4 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous experience supporting maintenance of CNC machine tools.
  • College transcripts reflecting a GPA of 3.0 or greater.
Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
