CAD Designer 2 / Drafter - Nuclear Facilities (DOE/LANL)
Location: Los Alamos, NM | 100% Onsite (TA-55)
Compensation: $38-$40/hr
Schedule: 4/10s Duration: 1-year contract | Extension possible

WHY THIS ROLELos Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a Designer 2 / Drafter to support technical drawing and CAD modeling work at TA-55, one of the nation's most consequential nuclear facilities. This is a hands‑on drafting and computer modeling role where your precision and technical knowledge directly supports engineering and construction projects critical to the national security mission.
You will prepare and revise drawings and computer models across a range of assignments, from simple revisions to complex multi‑view drawings developed from sketches, specifications, and layouts. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES- Prepare various drawings and computer models for construction projects, parts, and assemblies, including multiple views, sectional profiles, irregular and reverse curves, hidden lines, and intricate details
- Apply conventional drafting and CAD techniques with working knowledge of occupation‑specific terms and procedures
- Perform arithmetic computations using standard formulas to support drawing accuracy
- Prepare and revise detail and design drawings for electrical and electronic equipment installations, plant wiring, and printed circuit board manufacturing and assembly, including mountings, frames, guards, conduit layouts, and wiring diagrams
- Prepare several views of mechanical systems from layouts and manual references, obtaining dimensions and tolerances from manuals and by measuring layouts
- Draw base and elevation views, sections, and details for construction and infrastructure projects including structures, roadway drawings, and utility line maps
- Complete simple revisions from verbal direction and more complex revisions from sketches, computer models, or specifications
- Work on familiar assignments with general direction and unfamiliar assignments with guidance on methods, procedures, and sources of information
- Demonstrated experience with CAD software and conventional drafting techniques
- Working knowledge of drafting terms, procedures, and standards applicable to engineering and construction drawings
- Ability to prepare multi‑view drawings including sections, profiles, hidden lines, and detail views
- Experience revising existing drawings and computer models from sketches, specifications, or verbal direction
- Proficiency with arithmetic computations using standard engineering formulas
- Ability to read and interpret layouts, manuals, and technical references to obtain dimensions and tolerances
- S. Citizenship and ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance
- Experience with electrical or electronic equipment drawings, wiring diagrams, or conduit layouts
- Background in structural or civil drafting including bridges, roadways, or utility infrastructure
- Prior experience in a DOE, nuclear, or similarly regulated technical facility
- Familiarity with NX, AutoCAD, Creo, or similar CAD platforms used in engineering environments
- Experience with GD&T and engineering drawing standards
- Must be a U.S. Citizen - Q Clearance eligibility requires citizenship, no exceptions
- Must have demonstrated CAD and drafting experience with the ability to produce multi‑view technical drawings independently
- Must be able to obtain a DOE Q Clearance - subject to federal background investigation
- Must be available 100% onsite at TA-55, Los Alamos, NM - no hybrid or remote
