** What You Will Do*
* ** This position is open for external candidates only to apply.*
* ** This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or R&D Engeer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.*
* The W93 Systems Development and Realization Group (Q-20) is seeking an R&D Engineer 2/3 to support the United Kingdom's Astrea A21/Mk7 Warhead Program Integration. This position plays a central role in coordinating the design and engineering integration activities between the US and UK programs.

The selected candidate will facilitate technical and programmatic communication across both efforts, participating in working groups and subgroups to understand evolving requirements and priorities. A primary responsibility is supporting responses to technical questions from the UK A21 integration team. This includes working with US subject matter experts to evaluate inquiries, determine relevance to the W93 program, and develop clear, accurate responses.

When requirement or capability gaps are identified, the engineer will coordinate with NNSA and other agencies to develop official responses through appropriate channels.

Success in this role requires a strong understanding of LANL organizations and capabilities, the ability to extract and synthesize detailed technical information from multiple sources, and the judgment to produce concise responses under tight deadlines. Some domestic and international travel is required.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the first new US weapon system program in more than 30 years. Q-20 defines, develops, and fields the W93 warhead system for the Navy's newest submarine-launched ballistic missile program. The group supports DoD/Navy Strategic Systems Programs and DOE/NNSA customers in translating mission needs into technical and programmatic requirements.

The W93 program works closely with Sandia National Laboratories and Lockheed Martin, the re-entry system design agency, to ensure safe, secure, and reliable warhead performance. Q-20 also integrates production agencies including KCNSC, Pantex, SRS, Y-12, LANL, and SNL into the design, qualification, and realization processes. The A21 Integration Group interfaces regularly with the UK Atomic Weapons Establishment and the Ministry of Defence/Defence Nuclear Organisation.

Q-20 emphasizes systems and design engineering with a focus on improved performance, safety, producibility, and agility for the future stockpile.

The Weapon Stockpile Modernization Division (Q Division) provides systems engineering and program management to deliver qualified engineering solutions that enhance the safety, reliability, and security of the nation's nuclear stockpile throughout the weapon life cycle. The division leads new weapons programs as well as life extension and alteration projects.

This position resides within the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Engineering (ALDW).
