What You Will Do
The Pit Technologies (PT) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory is the operational group at the forefront of plutonium pit manufacturing and surveillance, enabling the modernization and continued stewardship of the United States’ thermonuclear weapons stockpile. This position is assigned to the Tooling Design Team within (PT-8) of PT Division. The team’s primary mission is to design tooling and equipment for all aspects of the pit production flowsheet.
As a designer/drafter assigned to the Engineering and Product Support Group you will support the development of tooling and equipment for all Pit Technologies groups and operations, primarily through CAD modeling and drafting. You will work closely with other Pit Technologies product engineering, design, and fabrication personnel in a dynamic and collaborative work environment to supply customers with timely and novel tooling designs that are fit for use in a Category 2 nuclear facility.
You will be expected to work independently and be self‑directed in determining technical objectives of assignments, which you may complete without established procedures, while also working as part of a high‑performing team and contributing to continuous process improvement initiatives.
Salary $54,900 – $84,300.
- Perform all functions described in “What You Will Do.”
Salary $66,100 – $103,600.
- Perform all functions of Designer/Drafter 2 with greater proficiency.
- Additional responsibilities include more complex CAD modeling, leading small design projects, and mentoring junior staff.
Job Requirements
- Computer‑aided Design – Experience in using CAD and PDM software to produce models, drawings, layouts and sketches; working understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principles, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T; fundamental understanding of ASME, ANSI, AWS standards.
- Mechanical/Machining – Fundamental engineering, design, and drafting concepts; knowledge of design, fabrication, assembly and fielding of components and mechanisms; understanding of component and tool design, fixturing, printed circuit boards, schematics, facility equipment; familiarity with machine shop equipment (mill, lathe, drill press, welder, inspection equipment); engineering materials and suitability for component design.
- Teamwork – Ability to work on diverse teams and collaborate on novel designs with minimal guidance.
- Designer/Drafter 3 Additional Requirements – Intermediate level knowledge and proficiency in the above skills.
- Designer/Drafter 2:
High School Diploma or equivalent and 3 years of related experience, or equivalent education/experience. - Designer/Drafter 3:
Associate’s Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 3 years of related experience, or equivalent education/experience.
- Knowledge and experience with Creo Parametric and PDMLink.
- ASME GDTP Technologist Certification (ASME Y14.5‑2009) (higher level only).
- Active DOE “Q” clearance or equivalent.
