What You Will Do

We are seeking graduate students with an undergraduate degree in physics, chemistry, computer science, or materials science to join our research teams in Los Alamos National Laboratory's Theoretical Division (T‑Division), specifically the T‑1 group. The group studies how atomic‑level forces manifest in macroscopic material properties and maintains theory, modeling, and simulation capabilities across a broad set of materials‑related areas. You will work on a research project with a staff scientist mentor and co‑mentor in one of these areas.

The position typically begins in summer but can start at any time during the year.

What You Need

Minimum

Job Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in Engineering, Physics, or another STEM discipline.
  • Enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours (or full‑time equivalent).
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience conducting scientific research.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context.
  • Computer programming experience (Python, C++, etc.) in support of scientific or engineering applications.
  • Application of advanced mathematical methods to develop models of physical phenomena.
  • Familiarity with computational research in areas such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and quantum computing.
Work Location

Onsite at Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
