What You Will Do
Are you a talented and driven engineer looking to develop, maintain, and apply a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions? Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to join the Engineering Services (ES) Division. As a vital member of the ES‑DO team you will contribute to the implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure, and component modifications and new installations, as well as supporting existing systems, modifications, and customers occupying the facilities.
- Respond to emerging facility issues
- Manage configuration and facility technical baseline data
- Provide electrical and pressure safety support
- Review designs for facility modification and provide system health reporting
As a Level 1 Mechanical Engineer you will serve as the owner's representative for engineering for your assigned facilities, collaborating with design teams, maintenance, and operations.
- Learn about facilities systems design and operation from seasoned engineers
- Develop engineering judgement and apply industry codes and standards
- Obtain, evaluate, and compare equipment selections from manufacturers
- Produce design deliverables including drawings, specifications, test and inspection plans (TIPs), statements of special inspections (SSIs), and calculations
- Run all engineering facets of a project from scoping to construction to sustainment
- Foster relationships with project stakeholders and customers as a representative of Engineering Services
- Facilitate technical growth of the engineering team
Job Requirements
- Ability to prepare calculations, apply engineering methods, and use technology‑aided engineering tools for facility and operations‑based challenges
- Support timely and collaborative construction execution, including review of submittals, RFIs, design changes, non‑conformance issues, and commissioning documentation
- Basic knowledge of engineering principles, codes, and standards
Job Requirements – Level 2
- Demonstrated design experience in commercial and/or government sectors
- Knowledge of engineering work planning and design coordination
- Collaborative problem‑solving, commitment, and team‑orientation
- Thorough knowledge of engineering principles
- Experience in development of engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, TIPs, and SSIs
Level 1:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and 2 years of practical work experience. Advanced degree or EIT registration is highly desirable.
Level 2:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience. Advanced degree or PE registration is highly desirable.
- Mechanical engineering degree and/or experience with facility mechanical systems
- Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
- Design or operations experience in nuclear, accelerator, or industrial facility operations
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Revit for design production
- Knowledge of DOE, LANL Engineering Standards, and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures
The position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Regular appointment employees must serve a period of continuous service in their current position for eligibility to apply for posted jobs. The position commitment for this role is one year.
