What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Process & sampling Tec level 3 or 4, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Work as part of the Radiation Instrumentation and Calibration Team in the Radiation Protection Services Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory. This team supports the Radiation Protection Program by maintaining, calibrating, troubleshooting and developing radiation protection instrumentation. Duties will include supporting the test, evaluation, maintenance, and calibration processes for fixed and portable alpha, beta, neutron, photon, and tritium radiation protection instruments.
As a member of the team, you will maintain accurate computerized and written calibration records and other pertinent documentation. You will interact with team staff members, health physicists and radiological control technicians. This position may require shift work.
- Process and Sampling TEC-3 will be responsible to repair RP instruments and calibrate RP instrumentation with radioactive sources with frequent troubleshooting issue or concerns. Responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating processes, procedures, and applications.
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, the Tec 4 position will:
- Perform a higher level of electronic component troubleshooting, evaluating newly purchased instrumentation and working with the RP instrumentation manufacturers.
- Responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating processes, procedures, and applications.
Job Requirements
- Experience in the maintenance and repair of instrumentation.
- Experience with analog and digital electronic troubleshooting and repair at the board and component level.
- Experience in circuit-board level diagnosis and repair using standard equipment such as voltmeters, oscilloscopes, and soldering irons.
- Utilize computers, high voltage/low-current power supplies, pulse generators, other test equipment and radioactive sources to test and/or calibrate electronic equipment.
- An excellent record of dependability, availability, attendance, and punctuality is essential.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision.
- Experience with personal computers (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to follow technical procedures.
- Applicant must have the ability to obtain a Q, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.
Job Requirements for Tec 4
- Assist in development, implementation, and evaluation of the overall team's quality assurance program.
- Ensures implementation of required corrective actions, initiates and assist in the closeout of non-conformance issues.
- Develops, evaluates and implements new assembly processes and procedures.
The position requires an Associate's Degree in Electronics or related field and 3 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at Process & Sampling Tec 4The position requires an Associate's Degree in Electronics or related field and 5 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications- Advanced experience in performing alpha- and beta-radiation repair and calibration of radiation protection instrumentation (portable survey instruments, personnel contamination monitors, and continuous air monitors)
- Familiarity with radiation principles and practices.
- Experience in development of technical procedures.
- Experience in testing and evaluation of radiation detection instrumentation.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, security, quality and excellent customer service.
Lift and carry 10-20 lbs, general mobility (sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, stooping, crouching, etc.), gripping and applying torque with hands or arms, fine motor control.
Work EnvironmentRequires wearing safety shoes.
Work LocationThe work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position CommitmentRegular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
