Position: Controls Systems Integrator (Engineering Technologist 4)

What You Will Do

The DARHT Experiments and Radiographic Science (J-4) group at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a controls systems integrator to provide software development and system integration support for critical experimental facilities. The successful candidate will work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment that includes scientists, engineers, technicians, IT professionals, and collaborators from diverse backgrounds. A description of the position's roles and responsibilities include the following:

  • Integrate control systems with specialized hardware applications across multiple experimental and measurement platforms.
  • Develop and maintain control system software for experimental timing, control, and data acquisition systems.
  • Work closely with scientific and engineering staff to translate experimental requirements into functional control solutions.
  • Design, build, and commission integrated systems from concept through deployment.
  • Plan and execute system commissioning activities and assembly workflows.
  • Provide controls systems technical expertise and troubleshooting support across multiple J-4 programs.
  • Develop and deploy test systems to validate hardware and software integration.
  • Maintain technical documentation and implement best practices for system development.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and security requirements.
What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

Technical Skills
  • Expert knowledge of LabVIEW development with proven ability to develop and deploy complex applications.
  • Expert knowledge of PLC systems and demonstrated ability to integrate PLCs with control system software.
  • Demonstrated experience with National Instruments hardware platforms including cRIO, PXI, CompactDAQ, and DAQmx.
  • Expert knowledge of industrial communication protocols including GPIB, RS-232, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, and SQL.
  • Demonstrated expertise in architecting and deploying large-scale, mission-critical control systems.
  • Ability to work with control system hardware for integration and testing purposes.
  • Proven track record developing innovative solutions to unique and complex technical challenges.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as technical specialist or subject matter expert.
Professional Skills
  • Experience working with minimal supervision on complex projects from concept through completion.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities with experience troubleshooting complex integrated systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with diverse technical teams.
Clearance
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship, and Sigma 15.

Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements
* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

* Eligibility requirements:
To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Education/Experience

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications
  • Current LANL employment with demonstrated performance.
  • Direct experience with DARHT, DDC, or similar high-consequence facility control systems.
  • LabVIEW Certification (CLAD, CLD, or CLA).
  • Experience building and deploying Hardware-in-the-Loop test systems.
