Position: Turnover and Commissioning Specialist (Project Specialist 3)

What You Will Do

You will be a member the Construction Project Execution - Project Completion and Startup Group, LANL's Startup, Turnover, and Commissioning Services organization that delivers commissioning and turnover services across Los Alamos National Laboratory's large facility portfolio. In this turnover and commissioning specialist role, you will plan and execute startup and functional testing, develop turnover and commissioning documentation, and coordinate with construction and operations to support safe, orderly turnover of projects to owning organizations.

You will take ownership of assigned systems and projects, serve as a methodical, safety-focused test director in the field and turnover coordinator for project completion. You will be provided the opportunity to continue to build deeper expertise through mentoring, training, and exposure to diverse mechanical, electrical, and controls systems.

Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Commissioning & startup fundamentals:
    You can apply standard commissioning and startup practices, including pre-functional verification, functional performance testing, deficiency tracking, and operational verification to confirm systems meet design intent.
  • Technical breadth (mechanical/electrical/controls):
    You can interpret drawings and specifications, understand core building system functions, and evaluate operability and maintainability considerations during design and turnover.
  • Turnover Packages:
    Ability to support development, compilation, and organization of system turnover packages; maintain status of turnover deliverables; and track open items/punchlist actions to closure in coordination with engineering, construction, QA, and operations.
  • Project coordination:
    You can coordinate work across project engineering, construction, vendors, and operations; track commitments; and support schedule and scope integration for startup and turnover activities.
  • Documentation & communication:
    You can write and present commissioning plans, procedures, checklists, and test summary reporting; you communicate effectively in meetings and field settings and work well on integrated teams.
  • Safety leadership:
    You incorporate safety into every task and demonstrate ownership of safe execution in field test activities.
  • Training/

    Certifications:

    Required training will be provided as part of onboarding. Commissioning certifications (for example, Building Commissioning Association or AABC Commissioning Group) are valued but not required.
  • Clearance:
    This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Department of Energy Q clearance (U.S. citizenship is generally required).
  • Education/

    Experience:

    Five or more years of project management, commissioning, construction and/or engineering support experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience specializing in project management, commissioning, construction and/or engineering support.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience developing turnover and commissioning deliverables (punchlists, turnover packages, commissioning plan, pre-functional checklists, functional test procedures, and final test summary reporting).
  • Experience performing as a test director or leading field execution of functional tests.
  • Familiarity with building automation systems, trending/data collection, and troubleshooting complex system interactions.
  • Knowledge of sustainability or efficiency concepts (for example, high-performance building principles or LEED exposure) and how they influence acceptance testing requirements.

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule

This position is primarily day shift, with flexibility for occasional off-shift testing, overtime, or weekend work to support safe system turnover and mission needs. Fieldwork across multiple facilities with occasional overtime or off-shift testing.
