Position: US Engineer Supporting A21 UK Integration (R&D Engineer 2/3)

What You Will Do

R&D Engineer 2/3 position plays central role in coordinating design and engineering integration activities between US and UK programs. Responsibilities include facilitating technical and programmatic communication, participating in working groups, supporting responses to technical questions from UK A21 integration team, evaluating inquiries with US subject matter experts, coordinating with NNSA and other agencies for official responses, and managing requirement or capability gaps.

Success requires strong understanding of LANL organizations, ability to synthesize technical information from multiple sources, and producing concise responses under tight deadlines. Some domestic and international travel is required.

Minimum

Job Requirements:

Position will be filled at R&D Engineer 2 or 3, depending on skills. Salary ranges $106,400 - $176,000 for R&D Engineer 2 and $128,000 - $215,900 for R&D Engineer 3.

Weapons Knowledge: Knowledge of Nuclear Weapons Systems and subsystems. Detailed knowledge of at least one of the following: nuclear weapon system design, qualification, certification, and production including materials, components, safety, and assembly.

System Engineering

Experience:

Experience in one or more of the following: nuclear weapon design, development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, or surveillance. Application of system engineering principles at a basic level providing solutions in material science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, or chemical engineering.

Communication: Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; ability to interact with team members and management.

Project Facilitation: Ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple projects, foster cross‑organizational teams, and work independently with minimal supervision.

Education: R&D Engineer 2 requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and 4 years of related experience. R&D Engineer 3 requires a Master’s Degree in Engineering and 6 years of related experience (a Ph.D. may be preferred).

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience collaborating with UK Ministry of Defence or UK Atomic Weapon Establishment
  • Detailed knowledge of nuclear weapon systems and their associated delivery vehicles
  • Familiarity with Navy nuclear weapon program and organization structures
  • Understanding of re‑entry, gravity, and powered flight weapon systems used by DOE and DoD
  • Knowledge of weapon surety and safety solutions
  • Familiarity with development of specifications for components and systems
  • Experience presenting technical design details to technical and non‑technical customers
  • Understanding of NNSA and DoD qualification processes
  • Active Q clearance
Work Location

The position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position Commitment

Regular appointment employees must serve a minimum continuous service period in their current position to be eligible for posted jobs. The commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance

Position requires a Q clearance. Selection will involve a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements. Q clearance requires U.S. citizenship except in very limited circumstances.
