Q-Group Leader; R&D Manager

What You Will Do

This position is open for both internal and external candidates to apply.

You will be responsible for line management of the Advanced Systems Development Group (Q-18) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Q-18 contains teams dedicated to warhead systems engineering, nuclear explosive package engineering, development engineering, future system architectures, project management, and rapid assessment. You will direct the Q-18 team and work with other LANL organizations to lead operational, technical and programmatic work associated with the development and delivery of systems and products to meet current and future U.S. nuclear weapon needs.

You will be responsible for providing trained and qualified staff to execute early concept (pre-phase 1 and phase
1) weapon engineering work. You will contribute to the nuclear weapon stockpile modernization strategy and develop roadmaps to guide development activities toward applications that support weapon systems.

You will represent LANL at meetings with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of War (DoW), and other labs plants and sites.

Other responsibilities include ongoing leadership of the Q-18 team members, program planning and development, long-range budget preparation and justification, planning integration with other program elements in overall support of stockpile stewardship objectives, and ongoing program management, including program reviews and earned value reports. You will provide technical, managerial and programmatic leadership and strategic planning for technology development activities as part of the national program, including physics (theoretical and experimental), materials, production, and surveillance across all Laboratory organizations.

Frequent travel may be required based on programmatic needs.

Job Requirements:

• Demonstrated capability and experience in technical leadership and program management, including success in program development, program advocacy, strategic planning, resource planning and allocation, technical program execution, and/or negotiation.
• Record of professionally recognized accomplishments and demonstrated expertise in a major element of the nuclear weapons program.
• Demonstrated successful leadership of technical projects and personnel.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills both oral and written, including the ability to promote teamwork and resolve conflicts.
• Demonstrated successful teamwork and consensus building.
• Demonstrated ability to team, collaborate, or integrate across program lines to accomplish larger program goals.
• Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with representatives from multiple organizations and at all organizational levels.

• Demonstrated knowledge of nuclear weapon systems engineering and mechanical design.

Education/

Experience:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired

Qualifications:

• BS in science or engineering
• MS or PhD in Mechanical, Nuclear, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or a closely related technical field
• Demonstrated line management experience
• Partnerships with DoW, NNSA, ALDX, and Nuclear Weapon Labs, Plants, and Sites
• Demonstrated successful experience working with NNSA and DoW Technology Maturation program offices.
• Prior experience with weapons in the current nuclear stockpile, production, systems, physics, or surveillance, or high-explosive behavior.
• Experience with NNSA weapon program business practices and the Phase X/6.X process
• Knowledge of LANL financial, project controls, and procurement systems.
• Active Q clearance.
• Active TS/SCI clearance
