What You Will Do
The High Performance Computing (HPC) Division delivers production grade HPC systems and services to the Laboratory. Our responsibilities begin with the early stages of acquisition, development, and production readiness of HPC platforms, and extend through the ongoing maintenance, operation, and management of the facilities that host them. We also oversee the associated network, parallel file systems, storage, and visualization infrastructure. By directly supporting the Laboratory's HPC user community, we enable researchers to harness these resources effectively for scientific breakthroughs.
In addition, we back select research initiatives that align with our mission.
Shift 24x7 operations with CST-3 or CST-4 level responsibilities depending on selected candidate.
Computing Systems Technician You will join a dynamic, team-oriented group that provides 24×7, mission-critical technical support for LANL's HPC platforms.
Responsibilities- Deliver day to day technical support for a diverse, heterogeneous set of HPC clusters.
- Monitor and maintain system health, network infrastructure, parallel file systems, and hardware components.
- Diagnose and resolve hardware and software issues to sustain continuous computational capability.
- Contribute to ongoing capability upgrades and performance improvements across the HPC environment.
- Collaborate with vendors, system engineers, and other support teams to ensure seamless operations.
Minimum
Job Requirements:
- 24/7 Strategic Support: Ability to work an assigned shift (day, swing, or grave) as part of a 24x7 Computer System Support Team. Off-hours may include weekends, holidays, on-call, and short-notice coverage. This position is essential personnel and may require reporting during inclement weather and closures.
- Hardware Expertise: Basic knowledge of complex heterogeneous computing systems and experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing hardware failures to component level on servers.
- System Monitoring and Response Acumen: Familiarity with ticket/issue tracking systems and the ability to monitor computer consoles and peripherals to identify diagnostic needs and initiate recovery procedures.
- System Administration
Experience:
Basic knowledge of Linux and/or Windows operating systems. - Communication and Teaming
Skills:
Effective verbal and written communication, ability to share knowledge with peers, and collaborate with HPC group members and vendors.
- Experience in a production HPC environment
- Intermediate knowledge of Linux CLI
- Experience supporting midrange/mainframe computers and JCL/job control languages
- Experience with RAID systems
- Familiarity with classified electronic media handling
- Ability to interpret facility monitoring error messages
- Experience configuring and repairing network switches
- Ability to script in languages such as shell, Python, or Perl
- Active DOE Q clearance
- Active SCI eligibility

Work LocationOnsite in Los Alamos, NM. Work locations are at management discretion.
Work ScheduleSwing shift on a 24/7 team with three shifts (day, swing, grave). Off-hours work may include at least an 8-hour shift every other weekend, holidays, and on-call duties.
Position CommitmentRegular appointment employees must serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible for posted jobs Laboratory-wide. The commitment for this position is 1 year.
