Computing Systems Professional ; Windows​/Server Support & Administration

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Computing Systems Professional 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. The successful candidate will support customers and their systems, including but not limited to:

• Assisting with Windows Server patching and basic vulnerability remediation.
• Supporting the building of virtual machines by following established procedures.
• Helping maintain server inventory and updating lifecycle documentation.
• Participating in routine administration tasks, basic troubleshooting, and monitoring.
• Working directly with customers and stakeholders using professional communication.
• Collaborating with team members to improve processes and documentation.

• Performing Windows Server patching and vulnerability remediation with moderate independence.
• Independently building virtual machines and maintaining server environments.
• Managing server inventory and ensuring lifecycle documentation accuracy.
  
  Handling more complex troubleshooting and routine system administration tasks.
• Engaging directly with customers and stakeholders to drive issue resolution.
• Contributing to improvements in processes, documentation, and service delivery.

• Basic understanding of Windows Server or Windows operating system concepts.
• Foundational knowledge of virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper‑V, or similar).
• Ability to follow documented processes and work with senior staff for guidance.
• Strong professionalism and communication skills.
• Willingness to learn vulnerability remediation and enterprise security practices.
• General troubleshooting skills and eagerness to learn.
• Ability to obtain a DOE Q‑Clearance.

• Hands‑on experience with Windows Server or enterprise Windows environments.
• Working knowledge of virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper‑V).
• Experience with patching workflows and basic vulnerability remediation.
• Ability to work professionally with customers, stakeholders, and technical teams.
• Troubleshooting skills with ability to resolve common server issues.
• Understanding of security best practices and willingness to grow expertise.
• Ability to obtain a DOE Q‑Clearance.

Lower level:
Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Higher level:
Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of four years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Windows system administration experience through coursework, labs, or internships.
• Familiarity with enterprise management tools (SCCM, Tanium, Ivanti).
• Exposure to compliance frameworks such as STIGs or CIS Benchmarks.
• Basic understanding of virtualization platforms.
• Strong organizational skills and interest in documentation.

The work location for this position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM.

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service of one year in the current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs. New employees must have completed the required time in the current position or have documented approval of the Division Leader.
