Position: Windows Server Administrator (Computing System Professional 1/2)

What You Will Do

Position will be filled at either the Computing System Professional 1 or 2 level, depending on the selected candidate’s skills. The successful candidate will administer Windows systems across unclassified and enclave networks, including Active Directory management, server maintenance, and end‑user support. The role includes supporting the Utilities and Institutional Facilities organization that manages building automation systems (BAS), equipment surveillance systems (ESS), and waste and water systems at various lab locations.

Computing

Systems Professional 1

Compensation: $72,800 – $115,400.

  • Installing, configuring, and troubleshooting virtual and physical servers.
  • Ability to troubleshoot user issues through on‑site and remote support.
  • Setting up and installing software.
  • Monitoring applications for device downtime and responding to unresponsive devices.
  • Communicating technical information to both technical and non‑technical personnel.
Computing Systems Professional 2

Compensation: $87,800 – $143,000.

  • All responsibilities of the level 1 role.
  • Providing Windows server support and troubleshooting network issues.
  • Working with vendors to ensure security and compliance of server and system platforms.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving network issues.
  • Ensuring reliability, security, and data integrity for managed systems.
  • Informing and coordinating with teams on technical decisions.
  • Communicating technical information to both technical and non‑technical personnel.

Job Requirements for Computing Systems Professional 2
  • Experience in Windows Server support and administration, including Active Directory and Group Policy.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving network issues.
  • Ensuring reliability, security, and data integrity for managed systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting problems using hands‑on and remote tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbally.
Training / Certifications

Advanced vendor certification (Microsoft Windows, Networking, SCADA systems).

Education / Experience
  • Computing System Professional 1:
    Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Computing System Professional 2:
    Bachelor's degree in a related field and a minimum of four years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
  • VMware vSphere administration and implementation skills.
  • Active DOE L or Q clearance, or equivalent transferable clearance.
  • Extensive experience with SCADA systems, building automation, and control systems.
  • Experience working with auditors to ensure system compliance and participating in security and compliance audits.
  • Ability to manage vendors to ensure security and compliance of diverse server and system platforms.
  • Experience solving complex software and hardware issues in a heterogeneous computing environment.
  • Strong customer interaction and presentation skills.
  • Monitoring applications for device downtime and responding to unresponsive devices.
Work Location

Hybrid location in Los Alamos, NM – working partially on‑site and partially off‑site but within a two‑hour commute.

Position Commitment

The position commitment is one year. Regular appointment employees must serve a continuous period of service in their current role to be eligible to apply for laboratory jobs.
