Operations Manager
What You Will Do
As a Manufacturing Support Manager, you will serve as a first-line leader responsible for guiding a diverse, multidisciplinary workforce that supports complex, moderate-to-high hazard manufacturing and infrastructure operations. This role plays a critical part in enabling safe, secure, and reliable mission execution within technical and operational environments, including nuclear and explosives facilities. You will integrate safety into every aspect of work, lead with accountability and transparency, and ensure operational excellence across training, quality, maintenance, supply chain, and project execution activities.
By aligning team priorities with organizational strategy, you will directly contribute to Los Alamos National Laboratory's national security mission while fostering a culture of continuous improvement, learning, and respect.
- Lead and supervise employees performing manufacturing and operational support functions.
- Ensure compliance with safety, security, quality, and regulatory requirements.
- Manage personnel, financial, and project-related activities to support organizational objectives.
Job Requirements
- Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary teams of technical and non-technical personnel in operational or manufacturing support environments.
- Proven ability to implement Integrated Safety Management principles, including integrating safety into work planning, stopping work when necessary, and fostering open communication.
- Thorough knowledge of regulatory compliance and facility requirements applicable to nuclear, manufacturing, production, or other high-hazard operations.
- Experience managing project execution, including scope, schedule, cost, and resource allocation.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across organizational boundaries.
- Demonstrated experience identifying, acquiring and managing resources in support of organizational deliverables, scope, schedule, and cost.
- Experience working in nuclear, explosives, or other high-hazard facilities.
- Demonstrated success managing business operations such as financial stewardship, procurement, property, and workforce planning.
- Experience with work package development, resource-loaded scheduling, and performance metric reporting.
- Prior experience fostering inclusive, respectful work environments and supporting workforce development and succession planning.
Minimum:
Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution and a minimum of five (5) years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
426.2A - Requires a baccalaureate degree in engineering or a related science or technology, and 4 years of nuclear experience. Job‑related education or experience may be substituted on a case‑by‑case basis. The degree may be used to substitute up to 50 percent of the experience requirement per section I 4.e of the Contractor Requirements Document (CRD).
Work EnvironmentWork environments may range from administrative office settings to operational areas within nuclear or high-hazard facilities and may require adherence to strict safety and security protocols.
Work ScheduleThis position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift and/or weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift and weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Work LocationThe work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position CommitmentRegular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year
