We are seeking an experienced Project Manager 3 / Construction Manager to lead and oversee construction project execution at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This role is responsible for the successful delivery of construction projects in a high-hazard nuclear environment, ensuring safety, compliance, and operational excellence. The position requires strong leadership, technical construction expertise, and the ability to manage complex, multidisciplinary teams in a highly regulated setting.
Key Responsibilities• Lead and manage all aspects of construction project execution
• Provide technical direction and administrative oversight for:
- Field construction activities
- Project teams and site personnel
• Ensure safety and security are fully integrated into all work activities, including stopping work when necessary
• Review and manage:
- Project estimates
- Budgets and forecasts
- Schedules and cost performance
• Evaluate:
- Construction specifications and drawings for constructability and efficiency
• Coordinate across:
- Project Management
- Engineering
- Procurement
- Project Controls
• Resolve issues related to:
- Staffing
- Material delivery
- Contract/subcontract administration
• Support development and review of:
- Project procedures
- Operational controls
• Lead project planning activities including:
- Scheduling
- Resource planning
- Cost estimation
• Staff and manage construction site teams, ensuring:
- Performance
- Quality
- Technical adequacy
• Monitor field execution and ensure adherence to:
- Procedures
- Safety standards
• Serve as a Control Account Manager (CAM) as needed, including:
- Cost and schedule management
- Variance analysis
- Corrective action planning
• Present project updates, performance metrics, and issues to:
- Senior leadership
- Federal sponsors
• Foster a respectful, inclusive, and high-performance work environment
Minimum Qualifications Education & Experience• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field OR
• Equivalent combination of education and experience
• Typically requires 15+ years of experience in:
- Project management
- Construction
- Engineering
- Project controls or procurement
• Demonstrated experience managing:
- Scope, schedule, and budget
- Change control and reporting processes
• Proven ability to:
- Lead complex, multidisciplinary teams
- Deliver projects under competing deadlines
• Experience with:
- Project planning tools and methodologies
• Extensive knowledge of:
- Construction operations and quality
- Subcontract management
- Construction technologies
• Experience in:
- Constructability reviews
- Cost and schedule analysis
• Familiarity with:
- Facility construction and maintenance systems
- Compliance & Safety
• Strong understanding of:
- Government compliance standards
- Environmental regulations
• Experience working under:
- Nuclear quality standards (e.g., NQA-1) preferred
• Commitment to:
- Safety and security in high-hazard environments
• Strong leadership and team management skills
• Ability to:
- Coach and mentor staff
- Build consensus and resolve conflicts
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Experience presenting to:
- Senior leadership
- Federal stakeholders
• Proven ability to:
- Identify and mitigate project risks
- Analyze complex problems and implement solutions
• Experience with:
- Continuous improvement initiatives
- Root cause analysis
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance
• Must be a U.S. Citizen (required for clearance eligibility)
• Willingness to work:
- Flexible schedules, including potential 24/7 coverage
• Experience in:
- DOE or National Laboratory environments
- Nuclear facility construction projects
• Background in:
- High-hazard or secure facility operations
• Familiarity with:
- Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS)
- Control Account Management (CAM)
• 100% onsite at TA-55 (Los Alamos, NM)
• Work performed in:
- Indoor and outdoor environments
- High-hazard nuclear facilities
• Physical requirements may include:
- Walking
- Climbing stairs
- Kneeling and balancing
• Must be able to obtain a Q Clearance
Compensation: $88.00 per hour
