Nuclear​/Hazardous Materials P&T Specialist; Packaging Specialist

Position: Nuclear/Hazardous Materials P&T Specialist (Packaging Specialist 2/3)
** What You Will Do*
* This position will be filled at either the Packaging Specialist (PS) 2 or Packaging Specialist (PS) 3 level, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

As a team member of the P&T Mobile Packaging Van (MPV) and Service Center team, you will support Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) programs and projects with hazardous material packaging and shipping needs and will serve as a POC for hazardous material packaging and transportation operations.

** Packaging Specialist (PS) 2 $ 72,800 - $115,400*
* The selected candidate will: determine/classify hazardous material shipments ensuring they are compliant with Department of Energy Orders, Department of Transportation regulations, and/or International Civil Aviation Organization regulations; segregate shipments of hazardous materials in accordance with DOT, FMCSR and DOE orders; operate a forklift; have the ability to obtain all the requirements to become an authorized shipper; have the ability to follow policies and procedures without compromising safety and security.

This individual will also need to be familiar with handling classified material.

** Packaging Specialist (PS) 3 $ 87,800 - $143,000*
* In addition to what was outlined above, at this level, you will; be able identify potential risks and mitigate strategies and corrective actions to shipping activities; providing advice and consultation to programs to ensure hazardous materials are compliant and safe to ship; approve receipt authorizations; provide guidance and evaluations based on LANL's TSR policies; mentor junior hazardous materials shipping employees and assist with their training to become authorized shippers;

assist with developing procedures; participate as a key member of assessment teams. This may include overseeing day-to-day activities, ensuring compliance with all policies, procedures, and regulations. Safety and Security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees.

Job Requirements:

* + Previous or current authorization to ship hazardous materials on behalf of LANL, or equivalent training and experience in the private sector.

+ Current or easily obtainable, Department of Transportation Hazardous Material Shipping Training and/or International Air Transport Association regulations training

+ Strong written and verbal communication skills.

+ Knowledge of D.O.E. orders that govern transportation

Experience with logistical requirements of arranging a shipment.

+ Working knowledge of computer systems.

+ Ability to obtain hazardous authorized shipper certification.

+ Ability to obtain a CDL with hazardous material endorsement

+ Ability to obtain DPR authorities

Job Requirements for Packaging Specialist 3

+ Current authorization to ship all classes of hazardous materials and nuclear materials, including special nuclear materials (SNM) on behalf of LANL, or equivalent training and experience in the private sector.

+ Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in all aspects of technical and/or operational work in a shipping organization that handles all hazardous class and non-hazardous shipping and receiving.

+ Knowledge of the technical and operational discipline of hazardous and non-hazardous shipping.

+ Knowledge of regulatory and Laboratory requirements related to hazardous and non-hazardous shipping including 49 CFR, IATA, and DOT.

Experience with Material Control and Accountability of Nuclear Material transfer activities.

+ Working knowledge of authorization requirements for various hazardous material packaging

+ Working level knowledge of and training in the control and accountability of classified material

+ Demonstrated experience in developing and nurturing effective customer relationships with every level of personnel, including management and Federal oversight.

Experience with developing shipping policy in collaboration with other shipping organizations to ensure compliant hazardous materials shipping, packaging, and handling.

+ Thorough knowledge of integrated safety and security programs.
