What You Will Do
As a QC Quality Engineer, you will be part of the Plutonium Infrastructure Quality (PIQ) group, supporting the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Plutonium Infrastructure (ALDPI). Your role involves ensuring quality requirements are implemented in construction, maintenance, and modification projects. You will handle both deployed and institutional inspection activities under the guidance of experienced Quality Engineers.
The position is open for external candidates only. The role will be filled at either the Quality Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the candidate’s skills, with additional responsibilities assigned for the higher level.
Quality Engineer 3Salary: $106,400 – $176,000.
Responsibilities:
- Perform Level II QC inspections, proactively evaluate problems, and make initial recommendations for corrective actions.
- Develop and update inspection procedures, reports, inspection forms, protocols, and checklists.
- Act as a Nonconformance Report Coordinator (NCRC): track, report, and foster timely closure of open nonconformance reports.
- Apply advanced knowledge of welding and mechanical inspection skills and monitor operations for adherence to project plans and specifications.
- Record results of inspections/tests per applicable procedures and implement quality control procedures and policies.
Salary: $128,000 – $215,900.
Additional responsibilities beyond those of the Quality Engineer 3 include:
- Apply expert-level quality control techniques and statistical process control methods to identify correct measurement methods, tools, and systems.
- Identify data collection points; analyze data to identify failure modes, track trends, focus improvement actions, rate performance, and measure effectiveness.
Job Requirements
Quality Engineer 3
- Current or prior qualification as an American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector (for Mechanical Inspectors).
- Advanced knowledge of quality regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to understand and interpret physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
- Experience conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions for QC problems.
- Knowledge of national consensus standards such as ASME, ISO, ANSI/ASME NQA‑1, and US NRC regulatory guides, plus familiarity with construction codes and standards.
- Technical knowledge in engineering, environmental, procurement, construction, testing, and operations practices sufficient to evaluate and interpret specified requirements.
- Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills.
- Eligibility to obtain a DOE Q Clearance (requires U.S. citizenship).
- Ability to work a night or back‑shift schedule.
Quality Engineer 4
- Expert ability to understand and interpret physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
- Expert level knowledge of construction codes and standards and ability to apply quality requirements to construction projects.
- Understanding of project management methodologies and application of quality requirements in formally managed projects.
Education/Experience
- Lower level:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, QE, or Industrial Systems Engineering (or related field) and 8 years of related experience, or equivalent combination. - Higher level:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, QE, or Industrial Systems Engineering (or related field) and 12 years of related experience, or equivalent combination. Advanced relevant degree preferred.
- Working knowledge and experience with DOE QC programs of more than 3 years.
- Completion of a recognized apprenticeship certification program.
- Additional relevant education and/or certification in a related field.
- Experience performing measurements using Romer/Faro and with helium leak testing.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) and Adobe.
- Active DOE Q Clearance.
