Overview
What You Will Do
As a member of the Metal Production Group (PSD-1) a Research Technologist 1 or 2 will utilize and execute the principles of chemistry and material science to solve technical problems in support of pit manufacturing programs at LANL. A successful candidate will be expected to execute work based on programmatic demands, work both independently and as part of a team, and may contribute to continuous process improvements to meet customer requirements.
What You Will Do
As a member of the Metal Production Group (PSD-1) a Research Technologist 1 or 2 will utilize and execute the principles of chemistry and material science to solve technical problems in support of pit manufacturing programs at LANL. A successful candidate will be expected to execute work based on programmatic demands, work both independently and as part of a team, and may contribute to continuous process improvements to meet customer requirements.
Specific job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Utilize Safe Conduct of Research (ScoR) principles to execute laboratory work in a safe and conscientious manner.
- Uses professional concepts and laboratory objectives to resolve moderately complex scope in creative and effective ways.
- Works under collaborative direction and guidance towards predetermined goals and objectives.
- Applies scientific skills to solve routine technical problems.
- Work under the direction of staff and postdoctoral researchers to prepare and/or carry out experiments, maintain laboratory space and equipment, establish procedures, and coordinate tasks.
- Work collaboratively with postdocs, scientists, engineers, and technicians.
- Adapt to evolving requirements while meeting safety, security, compliance, and schedule imperatives.
- May contribute in the development of new methods, technologies, and analysis techniques for institutional programs.
- Contribute to programmatic objectives through the provision of project management and engineering support to successfully complete milestones.
Minimum
Job Requirements:
- Basic knowledge of scientific principles, practices, and procedures
- Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in oral and written communications

- Demonstrated experience with continuous improvement of concepts and tools
- Demonstrated commitment to high quality and timeliness of deliverables
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in high-intensity environments with coworkers representing a variety of technical backgrounds
- Demonstrated ability to express detailed ideas clearly in ways that build understanding, respect, and trust, as demonstrated through presentations and publications
- Ability to obtain a DOE Q-clearance
- Ability to enroll in the LANL Human Reliability Program (HRP)
Instrumentation (PXRD, SEM, NMR, UV/vis/NIR, Karl Fischer, etc.)
Education/ExperiencePosition requires a Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, physical science, engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications- General knowledge of statistics and statistical techniques applied to the fields of engineering and/or scientific experiments
- Glovebox experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of a broad range of techniques, including experience using PXRD, SEM, NMR, UV/vis/NIR, Karl Fischer Titrator, and/or ICP
Reading vision, ability to speak, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 Hz), sitting, standing, walking, crouching, reaching, use of both arms, applying torque with hands/arms, gripping with hands, and lifting 30+ pounds.
Work EnvironmentWork occurs primarily in a fume hood or glovebox environment near sources of ionizing radiation. PPE used includes eye protection, gloves, protective coveralls and shoe covers, and occasional respirator.
LocationThis position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitmentRegular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 years.
