Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Nuclear Materials Science Group (MST-16) supports a wide range of national security missions, including Plutonium Modernization, Pit Surveillance, Science Campaigns, and Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD). We are seeking an Actinide Electron Microscopy Lab Manager (Research Technologist
2)
to help advance the scientific output of a recently completed electron microscopy laboratory dedicated to plutonium and actinide research. This position is a regular, onsite role in Los Alamos, NM with a salary range of $94,500 – $154,600.

You Will:
  • Manage and maintain electron microscopy instruments and laboratory resources supporting actinide research
  • Serve as the primary maintenance and technical point of contact for SEM/FIB and Cs-corrected (S)
    TEM systems
  • Plan and execute experiments, collect data, and support scientific research efforts
  • Manage laboratory documentation, procedures, and operational workflows to ensure compliance and efficiency, and train users on microscopy equipment, laboratory procedures, and best practices
  • Coordinate laboratory activities with staff, collaborators, and service engineers across LANL
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and 5+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience
  • Hands‑on experience with (scanning) transmission electron microscopy and/or focused ion beam operation and sample preparation techniques for electron microscopy
  • Proficiency with data analysis and processing tools such as image analysis software, EBSD, EDS, EELS, or custom analysis using Python, R, or similar
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills to manage daily lab operations and work with diverse teams
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance and Human Reliability Program (HRP) certification

Qualifications:
  • Experience working in radiological or nuclear facilities with inert glove boxes and additional materials characterization techniques
  • Experience supporting and training new users and research collaborators
  • Experience collaborating with service engineers on microscope maintenance and troubleshooting
