Overview

The Biochemistry and Biotechnology Group (B-TEK) in the Bioscience Division is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic post-master's candidate interested in performing research within the facets of mass spectrometry - especially proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics. The successful candidate will work with a team of scientists, technicians, and students on multiple projects ranging from characterizing chemical exposure, understanding biological effects of chemical/non-chemical stressors, and developing biosample analysis including method development, data acquisition, and data processing.

The student will be expected to contribute to different projects as need arises. The ideal student must be meticulous in their work, self-starting, independent, and able to communicate in a professional manner. The term of the appointment is 2 years with opportunities to extend the appointment by transitioning to other LANL positions or continuing education.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct research and report results back to the team at weekly meetings.
  • On-the-job training and opportunities to craft peer-reviewed publications and grant proposals.
  • Attend seminars and LANL functions to expand knowledge and broaden interests.
  • Participate in networking and social events.
Qualifications

Minimum

Job Requirements:

  • General background in biology, chemistry, or analytical sciences
  • Demonstrated experience using bioinformatics tools and developing computational workflows
  • Familiarity with good laboratory practices and experiment design
  • Ability to maintain and record work performed, data obtained, and to write and follow detailed protocols
  • Ability to understand and present research results clearly and succinctly in both written and oral formats
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week on a consistent schedule
  • Ability to manage time and see tasks to completion

Education/

Experience:

  • Must have earned a Master's degree from an accredited institution (or international equivalent) within the last 3 years in an appropriate field
  • Must have graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)

Desired

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in analytical science
  • Broad fundamental knowledge of mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography
  • Expertise in analysis of biomolecules, including proteins, lipids, and metabolites
  • Experience in software development and developing computational tools to solve challenging scientific problems at the intersections of biology and chemistry
  • Expertise in machine learning and software development
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; interest in peer-reviewed publications and grant proposals
  • Experience with operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of various mass spectrometers including Thermo Fisher Orbitrap platforms
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python or R) and knowledge of mass spectrometry data packages
Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
