Research Scientist, Postdoctoral Research Fellow
What You Will Do
The Quantum and Condensed Matter Physics Group (T-4) in the Theoretical Division, together with the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) at Los Alamos National Laboratory, invites applications for a postdoctoral research position. We seek outstanding candidates with expertise in the theory and modeling of optical and photonic phenomena in low‑dimensional hybrid nanoscale semiconductor heterostructures. Emphasis will be placed on understanding and exploiting enhancements of the optical properties facilitated by the dielectric environment, including photonic and plasmonic cavities, photonic crystals, and wave guides.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant, multidisciplinary team of theorists and experimentalists working at the interface of fundamental science and emerging applications. This position offers exceptional opportunities for cross‑disciplinary collaboration, participation in scientific workshops, and attendance at major conferences.

- Demonstrated expertise in one of the following:
Theoretical/computational quantum optics, nanophotonics, or nanoplasmonics. - Experience in theory and modeling of optical properties of nanostructured semiconductors.
- The ability to work creatively and independently as well as learn and collaborate with experts as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent communication and writing skills, as evidenced by publications, cover letter, and interview.
- Experience in classical and/or quantum electrodynamic theory and modeling of photonic/plasmonic nanostructures.
- Experience in applying electronic structure calculation techniques to evaluate optical properties of nano‑structured semiconductors.
- Experience with finite‑difference time‑domain (FDTD) or finite‑element frequency‑domain electrodynamics simulations.
- Experience with High Performance Computing (HPC) or GPU computing.
- Experience in computer programming using modern computing languages.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to work productively on multiple projects.
Appointment is for a duration of two years, with the possibility of a third‑year extension based on performance evaluation. Candidates may be considered for a fellowship supported by the Center for Nonlinear Studies (CNLS). Outstanding candidates may be considered for a Director's Postdoc Fellowship or for the prestigious Richard P. Feynman, Darleane Christian Hoffman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Distinguished Postdoc Fellowships.
