What You Will Do
We are seeking graduate students with an undergraduate degree in biology, mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science, or a related field to join one of our research teams. Candidates will work in Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Theoretical Division (T‑Division), specifically in the T‑6:
Theoretical Biology and Biophysics group. T‑Division provides a unique and engaging environment that fosters multidisciplinary collaborations to support the laboratory’s strategic basic research and national security missions.
The Theoretical Biology and Biophysics (T‑6) focuses on the modeling of biological systems ranging from macromolecules to populations and the analysis and integration of heterogeneous biological data. T‑6 is the oldest theoretical biology group in the world devoted to mathematical modeling and computational analysis of problems in biology, medicine, and biosecurity. You will work on a research project with a staff scientist mentor and a co‑mentor in one of the aforementioned areas.
The position is expected to begin typically in the summer, but it can begin at any time during the year.
Job Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in any Biology, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, or other relevant STEM disciplines.
- Must be enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours (or full‑time equivalent).
- Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
- Experience conducting scientific research.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context.
- Familiarity with one or more standard scientific programming languages.
- Experience with high‑performance computing.
- Experience with machine learning and AI methods.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff and students from diverse backgrounds and disciplines.
- Strong critical thinking and data analytical skills.
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
