Position: Scientist (Scientist 3/4)
** What You Will Do*
* The Intelligence and Systems Group (A-2) provides the opportunity for you to collaborate with a team of analytical and technical experts in the areas of foreign threat reduction, counter-weapons of mass destruction, counter terrorism, and foreign nuclear systems. Our staff focuses upon a broad spectrum of nuclear and non-nuclear system applications impacting U.S. national security. Working under the auspices of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Field Intelligence Element (FIE), you will have the opportunity to lead scientific or technical research and development (R&D) in support of the Laboratory's mission, which may include leading a research team, expanding on existing technical efforts, developing novel techniques or capabilities, and analyzing data or outcomes from theoretical or experimental research that shapes national security decisions at the highest levels of the U.S. government.

With great breadth in the programs supported by A-2, it is not essential for candidates to have expertise in all technical areas of interest. Depending on the specific skill set of the selected candidate, there will be opportunities to work in one or more of the following areas:

+ Respond to threats and provide analytical and/or technical support.

+ Research, analyze, and produce intelligence products regarding emerging disruptive technologies impacting U.S. national security.

+ Research, analyze, and produce intelligence products characterizing nuclear-related materials, nuclear security, and/or nonproliferation.

+ Research, analyze, and provide analytical and/or technical support to nuclear and/or non-nuclear systems for U.S. national security.

There are opportunities for technically advanced analytical work performed here to be published in journals or conference proceedings.

Apply your analytic expertise in one or more of these areas:

+ Nuclear topics: weapon design, weaponization, testing, engineering, improvised devices, security, trafficking, materials, forensics, fuel cycle, weapon delivery, facilities and infrastructure, policy, proliferation, and strategic trade control.

+ Technology topics: artificial intelligence, biotechnology, quantum technology, semiconductors and microelectronics, space technology, advanced materials, advanced manufacturing, advanced communications, and other fields.

Collaborate across LANL, other DOE laboratories, the Intelligence Community, and government stakeholders. You will work with the nation's top scientists and intelligence professionals in feedback-driven teams that prize creativity, diverse perspectives, and rigorous analytical thinking.

Drive mission growth and innovation by securing internal or external funding; lead proposal development efforts, supporting analytical scope of work for yourself and/or your team.

Mentor and lead junior staff and peers, providing analytic direction and fostering professional development while maintaining tradecraft standards demanded by the Intelligence Community and U.S. government.

** This position will be filled at the Scientist-3 (Sci-3) or Scientist-4 (Sci-4) level depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities outlined below will be assigned if the candidate is deemed proficient and hired at the Sci-4 level.*

+ Contribute to the LANL FIE by leading in communicating results of technical R&D, including (but not limited to) publications, presentations, reports, intellectual property, technical products, etc.

+ Influences organizational, project, and program strategies and directions. Leads technical decision-making at task level within a project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives.

+ Uses project assignments to further organizational goals. Develops and implements project management plans, including scope, schedule, and budget, for small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks. Defines deliverables at project or major task level.
