Overview
The Environmental Sciences (EES) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an opening for a postdoctoral research associate. The position involves analyzing continuous seismic waveforms to inform evolving crustal properties over time and developing/testing state-of-the-art machine learning models. Experience in deep learning model development is necessary. The successful candidate will collaborate with LANL scientists and external academic partners. The appointment is for two (2) years with a potential extension to a third year depending on performance and funding.
The position is on-site in Los Alamos, NM.
- Analyze continuous seismic waveforms to inform evolving crustal properties over time.
- Develop and test state-of-the-art machine learning models, with emphasis on deep learning.
- Collaborate with LANL scientists and external academic partners.
- Contribute to research planning, execution, and dissemination of results.
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Research experience in deep learning model development and applications in geophysics
- Publication record including geophysics and deep learning applications
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C/C++
- Experience using high-performance computing resources
- Strong communication skills demonstrated by oral presentations at conferences
- Experience working on interdisciplinary teams
A Ph.D. in a STEM field related to geodesy, seismology, geophysics, applied mathematics, computer science, physics, or related fields. For a postdoctoral appointment, the candidate must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement or be within five years of completion.
Desired Qualifications- Experience with big-data processing and analysis methods
- Experience with development or support of research projects and proposals
- Ability to plan and organize assignments to meet project deliverables
- Ability to bring creative solutions to complex problems
- Ability to obtain Q clearance, typically requiring U.S. citizenship
The work location is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
