Research Scientist
What You Will Do
Work at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory at LANL (MPA-MAGLAB) to conduct research on high‑entropy materials. The emphasis will be on the fundamental science of point defects in fusion‑relevant high‑entropy alloys and the nature of magnetic order in disordered systems. The research will focus on the use of resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) to extract symmetry‑resolved information on point defects and examine the elastic constant tensor as a function of temperature and magnetic field.
RUS will be combined with dilatometry and heat capacity to examine anharmonicity, phase transitions, and magneto elastic phenomena. Work will involve collaborations with an interdisciplinary group of experimentalists and theorists spanning physics, chemistry, and materials science.
A background in experimental condensed matter or material science is required. Experience with performing measurements in cryogenic/high‑magnetic field environments and/or expertise in elastic, thermoelastic, or magneto elastic phenomena is preferred.
MinimumJob Requirements
- Experience with experimental research in condensed matter or material science
- Ability to work independently, creatively, and in a team environment
- Must have excellent written and communication skills in English
Education:
A Ph.D. in Physics or Material Science is required. The candidate must be within 5 years of completion of Ph.D. at time of being proposed for review by the committee and will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.
