Research Scientist
What You Will Do
You will work as the Project Leader for the Target Fabrication Team, creating experimental packages for the Inertial Confinement Fusion and High Energy Density Physics programs within the Office of Experimental Science. In this role you will coordinate teams of engineers and scientists leading production and development efforts to meet near‑term deadlines and long‑term development visions. You will also interact with NNSA Headquarters, presenting the Target Fabrication Project Plan that outlines budgets for required fabrication and development to meet physics goals set by X and P divisions and LANL Program Managers.
MST‑7 Target Fabrication has world‑leading capabilities in machining, robotic assembly, coatings, polymers, and characterization and requires a candidate with a broad range of expertise or exposure. The position is also a Scientist role, offering the opportunity to support development work as a Subject Matter Expert and to lead scientific development efforts within the team. A background in some aspect of target fabrication is desired.

Job Requirements
- Strong skills and initiative in organization, planning, teamwork, customer interactions, and interpersonal communications.
- Knowledge of fabrication and metrology technologies.
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires US citizenship.
- Develops innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems, expanding on existing efforts or establishing novel research directions.
- Leads in communicating results of technical R&D, including (but not limited to) publications, presentations, reports, intellectual property, technical products, etc.
Position requires a Master’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications- Experience in the field of either Target Fabrication or Plasma Physics in the HED and ICF field. Experience can be in either the engineering and machining, or the sciences of polymers, coatings, or characterization.
The work location for this position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position CommitmentRegular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible for posted jobs. If an employee has not met the required time, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this role is 1 year.
