Position: Detonation Physics Research Tech 4/5 — Onsite

What You Will Do

The Detonation Physics team in the Shock and Detonation Physics Group (M-9) delivers precision data on the detonation performance of a range of high explosive (HE) materials through the use of advanced diagnostics. Much of this work involves precision assemblies for state‑of‑the‑art examination of flows in extreme conditions. Diagnostics include time‑of‑arrival data, high‑speed framing cameras, detonation front shape imaging, and Photon Doppler Velocimetry.

The team also develops and deploys advanced sensors for HE behavior. This position will support these activities.

Research Tec 4 – Salary $72,800 – $115,400
  • Provide technical support for or conduct experimental work on the physics of high explosives; instrumentation installation and maintenance; data acquisition; fielding of experimental diagnostics, ancillary systems and related hardware.
  • Handle energetic materials.
  • Provide original contributions and technical leadership.
  • Work under collaborative direction and guidance toward team goals and objectives.
  • Contribute to production‑centric research and development activities in the research area of high explosives.
  • Ensure all work, materials, processes and final product meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
  • Protect and maintain sensitive or classified information.
Research Tec 5 – Salary $87,800 – $143,000

In addition to the responsibilities of Research Tec 4, a Research Tec 5 possesses advanced skills in one of the following areas:

  • Specialized training and knowledge for working in hazardous environments such as those involving high explosives.
  • Test and design, such as reading drawings and schematics, using digital test equipment, data analysis, high‑speed data acquisition systems and software.
  • Precision metrology techniques.
What You Need Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Solid understanding of technical concepts and designs.
  • Experience working on technical objectives assignments.
  • Experience working successfully in a team environment and exhibit collaborative behavior.
  • Knowledge and implementation of required safety, security, and quality assurance practices for the work assignment, including calibration concepts and protocols as appropriate.
  • Recognized as an experienced specialist in one or more relevant competencies.
  • Knowledge in technical areas such as metrology; analytical procedures and methodology; optical and laser systems; data acquisition systems; pressure systems; fiber optics; or electronic imaging.
  • Specialized training and knowledge for working in hazardous environments such as those involving high explosives.
  • Ability to carefully follow assembly procedures.
  • Knowledge in computers, computer programming, and/or software applications used in R&D.
  • May have formal training or experience machining a variety of materials with lathes, mills, drill presses, and saws, and other industrial apparatus.

Education / Experience

Research Tec 4:
Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Research Tec 5:
Associate's Degree and 7 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications

Some familiarity with common laboratory instruments such as microscopes, digital multimeters, and immersion density techniques.

Work Location

Onsite at Los Alamos, New Mexico. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Work Schedule

9/80 or 4/10.
