The Alpha Wing also supports the Pit Manufacturing program, which mission includes monitoring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and conducting advanced research in numerous areas related to national security.
Our research has made major impacts into how LANL operations and the greater community think about how Pu and its related nucleotides can be processed. This includes manufacturing and surveillance processes that are conducted at the nation's plutonium center of excellence, TA-55, PF-4.
Recently, the Alpha Wing has been tasked with assisting the Pit Manufacturing mission through chemical analysis of samples that are generated in the manufacturing plant. This Scientist 3 position offers a broad range of challenges including: rigorous R&D for developing Pu separation strategies, the planning and execution of analytical work, the creation and maintenance of rigorous procedures, and the approval and dissemination of analytical reports to program (Material Recycle and Recovery) and customer (Plutonium Supply and Disposition) organizations.
