Radiation Control Technician

We are seeking a Radiation Control Technician to join our team supporting the Los Alamos National Laboratory! This position is full-time and will be based out of Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Responsibilities
  • Provide radiological support in workplace surveillance, monitoring, and analysis/interpretation of radiological data.
  • Deliver operational health physics support across assigned facilities, functions, or areas.
  • Support and oversee high-hazard radiological work activities.
  • Ensure compliance with radiation protection standards, procedures, and 10 CFR 835 requirements.
  • Review radiological work plans to ensure proper controls, postings, and compliance with laboratory requirements.
  • Implement radiation protection procedures across a wide range of activities.
  • Interface with emergency personnel and respond to radiological or radioactive material incidents.
  • Support re-entry planning and direct monitoring activities during contamination events.
  • Provide mentorship and on-the-job training to junior technicians in radiation monitoring, contamination control, exposure control, emergency response, and radiation work permits.
  • Collaborate with Health Physicists to ensure appropriate safety measures and controls.
  • Assume field leadership responsibilities and direct other RCTs as needed.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision; apply technical judgment to solve complex radiological challenges.
  • Ensure work aligns with organizational objectives and established procedures.
Requirements
  • Education & Years of Experience – High School Diploma and 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Citizenship – To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.
  • Clearance – To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed.
  • Ability to meet requirements outlined in DOE Order 426.2 (Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities).
  • Strong understanding of radiological control principles, theories, and practices.
  • Experience supporting high-hazard radiological environments.
  • Knowledge of radiation protection regulations, including 10 CFR 835.
  • Ability to follow established procedures, specifications, and safety requirements.
  • Capable of working independently with limited supervision.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, and 24/7 coverage as needed.
  • Ability to work in outdoor and physically demanding environments.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and carry up to 35 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, crawl, and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Ability to use ladders and stairways.
  • Adequate vision, hearing, and communication abilities.
  • Ability to wear PPE, including respiratory protection.
  • Free from medical conditions that would prevent safe work in controlled radiological areas.

The NNSA's Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), located in Los Alamos, New Mexico, is a design laboratory responsible for the safety and reliability of the nuclear explosives package in nuclear weapons.
