249 work day contract
- July 01 to June 30

SUMMARY

Under general supervision to perform semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work in the construction, repair and maintenance of facilities and structures including buildings, parking areas, indoor and outdoor playground facilities, and other school properties; to operate a variety of equipment and tools; to perform a variety of skilled building trade duties including installing, repairing, and replacing electrical, electronic, and HVAC equipment, roof repair, locksmithing, glazing, painting, plumbing, carpentry, welding and brazing;

to perform a variety of technical duties in the repair and maintenance of all audio and video electronics equipment including VCR’s, tape decks, overhead projectors and other related equipment; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to an assigned area of responsibility.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the full journey level class within the Maintenance Technician series. Employees at this level receive instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are aware of all policies and procedures within the work unit. Positions are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower level, or when filled from external sources, have prior experience.

This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Technician IV in that the latter possesses a specialized functional or technical expertise beyond the journey level and may lead the work of lower level maintenance staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS

The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:

  • Operate heavy equipment or other machines to perform maintenance, construction and repair duties including but not limited to trenchers, jack hammers, backhoes, asphalt spreaders, or related equipment.
  • Perform a variety of painting duties; prepare and finish surfaces, walls and equipment; mix and apply paint and other surface coverings.
  • Perform a variety of locksmith duties including duplicating keys, changing lock combinations, and repairing or replacing locks to doors, desks, vehicles and safes; recommend proper methods and procedures of security as required.
  • Perform minor and routine electrical duties; inspect and replace bulbs, ballasts, circuit breakers and related components; install wiring; test systems; refer complex work to higher level electrical staff.
  • Perform a variety of plumbing duties; cut and thread pipes; maintain plumbing installations; install bathroom fixtures and water heaters; clean and drain water and sewer systems.
  • Perform rough and finished carpentry work to install, replace, or repair doors, walls, signs, desks, benches, shelves and tables.
  • Perform roofing duties; scrape and remove roofing material; install and repair roof insulation and decking; install and repair flashing, gutters and downspouts.
  • Perform welding and brazing duties on facilities and equipment; utilize a variety of welding tools and materials.
  • Install and maintain indoor and outdoor playground equipment; fabricate parts as necessary.
  • Pour cement and lay asphalt in the upgrade and repair of school grounds, parking areas and other structures as required.
  • Maintain and repair irrigation sprinklers, sprinkler lines and other landscape watering systems.
  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams and other technical documentation as required.
  • Clean and maintain project area upon completion of work.
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures established for work area.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of:

  • Principles and methods used within one or more skilled trade areas including carpentry, roofing, plumbing, painting, electrical, electronics, locksmithing, or a related trades maintenance field.
  • Applicable codes, rules and regulations pertaining to trade areas.
  • Methods and techniques of assessing and performing maintenance in assigned areas.
  • Methods and techniques of reading and interpreting maps, blueprints, diagrams and sketches.
  • Methods and techniques of welding and fabricating a variety of materials and equipment.
  • Methods and techniques of installing, repairing and maintaining locks.
  • Methods and techniques of installing and repairing glass and screens.
