What Will You Do

The Material Controls and Accountability Group (SP-NMCA) is seeking an experienced Software Quality Engineer professional with broad experience and knowledge in software and hardware qualification, testing, and verification techniques. The MC&A team works to ensure compliance with Material Control and Accountability requirements while working with staff from nuclear material operations to ensure the success of critical work in support of the National Security interests.

You will work with a team of highly skilled software-focused quality engineering professionals and software developers. Data analysis will become a core skill as the candidate develops NMCA skills and knowledge.

This position is a high-consequence-of-error position with frequent and regular formal auditor reviews to ensure compliance with the highest standards for software qualification/verification. This position will be filled at either the Quality Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

(Software) Quality Engineer 3 ($104,100 - $172,200)

This individual will be required to work within an existing, high functioning software and quality assurance team that adheres to formal operations and structured engineering standards for software development, test, and software quality assurance. The Quality Engineer 3 will be required to contribute to the development of system and software requirements and evaluate testing requirements and methods early in the software or system development lifecycle.

This position requires that the individual will sometimes serve as an intermediary with the stakeholder community for nuclear material accountability and control users to solve issues or verify functional correctness based on documented requirements/standards.

(Software) Quality Engineer 4 ($125,200 - $211,300)

In addition to the descriptors provided for Quality Engineer 3 above, working as a Quality Engineer 4 requires an overt role in leading and managing quality assurance initiatives for both hardware (system) and software application certification processes. Responsibilities in this position increase substantially in the form of providing technical justifications for testing and verification methods for software, as well as responsibility for a comprehensive understanding of the mission system.

This individual will be required to mentor lesser experienced staff and assist with technical development of comprehensive solutions from end users through development planning. This position also requires dedicated investment in development of formal methods and/or standards that are within DOE, along with authorship/ownership of required supporting documentation.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Quality Engineer 3

• Experience testing safety and/or risk significant software applications.
• Experience producing/authoring formal documentation containing software test justification and results.
• Substantial knowledge of software testing standards and/or methods.
• Proven ability to work independently, and as part of a team.
• Proven understanding of computer networking.
• Experience working closely with numerous customers in defining expectations, mutual responsibilities, and recognizing when software modifications are appropriate as a solution to existing problems.
• Ability to review and understand end-to-end operational work processes.
• Comprehensive understanding of contemporary software engineering best practices for hardware and software integration and testing, and software lifecycle maintenance and Quality Management.
• Experience working in highly dynamic team environments with frequent priority changes (multi- tasking).
• Experience working in highly structured and rigorously formal operational teams that must adhere to written procedures.
• Outstanding writing skills and proven communication skills.

Quality Engineer 4 (Additional to Quality Engineer 3 Job Requirements )

• Expert hands-on experience applying Software Quality Assurance principals to hardware and software.
• Experience testing large systems that require integration of hardware and software testing/verification with failover scenarios.
• Extensive experience troubleshooting and resolving issues for large population of software/system users.
• Expert hands-on experience presenting technical information in understandable forms to both management and users.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, Quality Assurance, or Industrial Systems Engineering or a related field and 8 year of related experience (Level
3) or 12 years experience (Level
4); or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
