Message From the Department

Foothill College is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. The college has a robust equity plan and is seeking an Instructor for the Biology Department that will contribute to the department with equitable student success at the forefront. The instructor will engage in implementing culturally relevant curriculum and other pedagogical practices to ensure the equitable recruitment, persistence and success of all STEM students, particularly Black and Latinx students.
Under the direction of the Dean of Science, Math, Engineering and Technology. Primary area(s) of teaching:
Anatomy and Physiology. Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extracurricular activities.

Teaching assignments will include both in-person instruction at Foothill campus and possible online instruction. Faculty are expected to engage in professional contributions on the Foothill campus throughout the academic year.

Knowledge of:
  • Anatomy and Physiology.
  • A range of pedagogical practices effective in teaching Biology.
  • Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Employ a diversity of teaching approaches, demonstrating sensitivity to students from varied backgrounds.
  • Adapt to a variety of teaching situations.
  • Work closely and cooperatively with faculty and support staff.
  • Work as a member of a team of professionals.
  • Work effectively with students, colleagues, staff, and others in a campus climate that values cultural diversity and multicultural understanding.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  • Master's in any biological sciences OR Bachelor's in any biological science AND Master's in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR the equivalent.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • College level teaching experience in anatomy and physiology and familiarity with lab equipment and materials used in those classes.
  • Experience examining classroom equity gaps, developing inclusive curricula, facilitating service learning, and/or applying evidence-based equitable teaching strategies.
  • Experience developing and implementing a diverse range of assessment strategies to track student learning and engagement.
  • The ability to be a reflective practitioner and work in a collaborative environment with a community of instructors.
  • Experience with proven practices that advance belonging and success in biology for Black and Latinx students and demonstrated knowledge of barriers for Black and Latinx students and experience in addressing disproportionate impacts.
