Looking for a full‑time job that allows you to make a difference in your community? City of Los Altos is currently seeking a facility maintenance worker and streets maintenance worker to join our City team and help maintain our public buildings, facilities, and streets.

Maintenance Worker I: $71,546.18 – $86,964.82 annually

Maintenance Worker II: $79,500.72 – $96,633.42 annually

ABOUT THE POSITION

Under general supervision, the Maintenance Worker performs a variety of semi‑skilled work in the maintenance of recreational & City facilities and public grounds. Operates maintenance and construction equipment; and does related work as required.

ABOUT THE DIVISIONS

Parks & Recreation – Facilities Division

The Parks & Recreation Facilities Division is looking for a team‑oriented individual with a great work ethic to join our team! The department mission is to provide the best possible service to the community of Los Altos in a way that is proactive, responsive and progressive. Performs a variety of routine, heavy, unskilled, semi‑skilled and skilled maintenance and repair of City’s facilities.

WORK

LEVELS

Maintenance Worker I (Entry Level)

Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of discretion and judgment on matters related to established procedures and guidelines as required of the MWII level. Must be able to perform heavy physical labor.

Maintenance Worker II (Full Journey Level)

Employees at the MWII level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.

The City may hire employees into the MW I or the MW II classification.

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Inspect city‑owned buildings, park grounds, structures, and related facilities for safety, appearance, and vandalism.
  • Clean and clear structures of debris and hazardous conditions; maintain city facilities; prepare indoor and outdoor facilities for special events.
  • Assist in the maintenance, construction, and repair of city facilities as necessary.
  • Operate trucks.
  • Perform general painting, plumbing, and carpentry work as needed.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in working order.
  • Perform duties related to pesticide control.
  • Lift and move heavy objects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

    Maintenance Worker I

    Experience:

    • Minimum of one year of experience in construction or maintenance work.
    • Facilities:
      • Building maintenance work involving carpentry, painting, plumbing, and HVAC.
      • Installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing fixtures/equipment, including toilets, pumps, and faucets.

    Education:

    • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

    Licenses &

    Certifications:

    • Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.

    Maintenance Worker II

    Experience:

    • Three years of experience in construction or maintenance work.
    • Facilities:
      • Building maintenance work involving carpentry, painting, plumbing, and HVAC.
      • Installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing fixtures/equipment, including toilets, pumps, and faucets.

    Education:

    • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

    Licenses &

    Certifications:

    • Must possess and maintain a Class B California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
    KNOWLEDGE OF

    Uses and purposes of various hand tools employed in basic laboring; safety precautions and practices necessary in working with hand tools and heavy equipment; the operation and maintenance of a variety of light and heavy equipment. Ability to perform the specific division duties as outlined below.
